Immunohistochemical study of the PI3K/Akt pathway biomarkers in invasive and non invasive breast carcinomas

Abstract

PI3K/Akt pathway is one of the most important signal transduction pathways activated by many stimuli, such as hormones and growth factors. It’s role in modulating apoptosis, in cellular development and movement determines the cellular survival.In this study, we have examined the role of easily estimated molecules of the PI3K/Akt pathway, by immunohistochemistry, that can possibly be related to the growth and proliferation of breast cancer cells.Seventy breast (n=70) adenocarcinoma cases were included in this study. Sixty tumors (n=60) were pathologically categorized as invasive breast carcinomas, whereas the rest of them (n=10) were diagnosed as pure in situ carcinomas. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was applied using anti-p53, anti-mdm2, anti-pakt and anti-PTEN antibodies in the corresponding tissue sections.Interesangly, a statistically significant correlation between ER and pAkt expression was observed (p=0,021), while it seems that the diminuished expression of pAkt was combined to a h ...
