This work addresses the current discourse on peri-urbanization dynamics and its emergence in the wide metropolitan area of Athens and the plain of Messoghia. The starting point of the research was based on the understanding of the driving forces behind the peri-urbanization phenomenon by focusing on the comprehension of the main socio-spatial transformation processes that are taking place in metropolitan fringe areas. The choice of the case-study was mainly based on the fact that the selected periurban zone of Messoghia (which until very recently was rural) is characterized by a high demographic increase and significant socio-economic and spatial changes observed under urban pressure.
