This doctorate Thesis deals with the life in a particular place and its parameters, such as physical and cosmic life, ecumenicity and anthropology. It is a part of the on going discussion regarding the relation of theology with literature and Art in general. The main resources of the Thesis are the works of Nikos Gabriel Pentzikis, the poet and novelist of Thessaloniki, who represents modernity in literature within the context of Greek literature of the thirties and beyond, as well as those of Wendell Berry, the American poet, novelist and essayist, a representative of the Agrarian culture and conservationist literature in the United States. In the first part of the Thesis the writer explores agrarian life mainly in the context of the fictional works of Wendell Berry, who is himself a writer and a farmer. Agrarian life is analyzed on the basis of the metaphor, or system of analogies named “At-one-ment”, which describes a trinity of relationships: with the earth, with the woman/man and ...
Agrarian life is analyzed on the basis of the metaphor, or system of analogies named “At-one-ment”, which describes a trinity of relationships: with the earth, with the woman/man and with God, mentioned in the works of Berry. Agrarians experience joy and sorrow in their lives and become capable of interpreting the Scriptures through their membership in creation and their emphasis on physical life. The farmer in the works of Pentzikis is identified with the God-Father who is united with the earth. The farmer manages to experience beauty through the embrace of the earth, which discloses resurrection. Thus, the Thesis proposes “agrarian theology” which resembles to the life of ascetics and mystics of Eastern Orthodoxy. The next chapter deals with the relationship of the living with the dead in the context of a particular community. The particular place is proved to be a main factor in the community between the living and the dead. Cemeteries as part of the community, where the living get acquainted with death, become the place where humans experience the eschatological metamorphosis in advance. Pentzikis connects the memory of the dead to prayer and the final Ressurrection, while Berry seems to focus on the first and the latter without witnessing an intermediate experience of metamorphosis before the final Resurrection. In the next chapter the writer analyzes locality and universality from the perspective of the life in a particular local community. Thus, affection for the homeland is pointed out as the means for the enactment of a real relationship with the world and the ratification of real catholicity. For both writers homeland is proved to be the starting point for the sense of another being's or person's life -close or distant. For Wendell Berry, imagination -that is explained as love, sympathy or “felt knowledge”- is essential within the relation of local and universal, and, in this, one can see his distinct contribution to the quest of the internal enactment of catholicity. The second part of the Thesis deals with the notion of the “otherplace” (Heterotopia). In the first chapter, the writer deals with the notions of migration and refuge from a theological point of view, as well as with the relative issue of hospitality which is experienced as Christ-centered. In the works of Pentzikis and Berry, journey is proposed as a spiritual notion (because it proposes openness towards the revelation of the unknown) and as a means for the soul's catharsis. The “otherplace” of monasticism is presented as a way of life in which the spiritual death and resurrection are combined with the devotion to the place, which is, in it self, a way of life. In the last chapter of the Thesis the writer mentions and analyzes the various ways in which Wendell Berry and Pentzikis overcome dualism and enact an anthropological and cosmic unity, which is the basis for the practice of “ecclesiasmos” and “secular pilgrimage”, the latter derived from the works of the American “nature poets”. Finally, the writer describes and analyzes the echatological places and the prophetic visions of Pentzikis and Berry as depicted in their fictional works. The eschatological otherplace in the works of both, is given in visions of the final communion between peoples, which will follow Resurrection, that will renew and metamorphose the whole of the created world. In this renewed reality humans take part in the life of the Light of the Word. The methodology of the Thesis is based on the notion of parallel reading (it quotes parts of the works of both writers by sequence and comments on them; or first quotes and analyzes the works of one of the two and then those of the other). Conclusions are drawn thereafter.
