In the present thesis, we attempt to present and analyze the levels of trust in the school unit, both the existence of trust relationships and the degree to which they exist, as well as the quality that characterizes them. Distinct emphasis is placed on differentiated professional identities and whether these are related to levels of trust. The structural condition of the permacrisis is particularly important for the study. The fact that Greece's recent social, economic, and political context has been characterized by volatility also adds significant weight to the study. The reason for the implementation of this dissertation was the researcher's personal interest, his previous research involvement with the topic of trust, and his familiarity with the field, the school unit and the classroom. The debt crisis, as the starting point of the successive crises, the permacrisis, has brought about insecurity and uncertainty. At the same time, the social subject is now characterized by an inability to act within the social and economic context. The permacrisis is a compound word, defined as a prolonged period of instability and insecurity, incorporating all the crises. Health, economic, environmental, and geopolitical crises and the social subject's sense of yet another anticipated crisis. All these individual mosaics that each crisis brings gradually make up the setting for the diversification of the professional identity of the teacher. We chose mixed methods research as the methodological approach, the combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used as research data collection tools. The target population included teachers and primary school headteachers of primary education school units in Western Greece. The research sample was extracted from these populations through simple random sampling, ensuring the sample's representativeness. This research, including the quantitative approach and the qualitative approach, was conducted from May 2023 to February 2024. The first (1st) chapter of the thesis presents the problem of the study, its purpose, and its usefulness. In the second (2nd) chapter, through the literature review, an attempt is made to outline the concept of trust as entirely as possible. Different methods of categorizing trust, as well as approaches of thinkers regarding this term, are detailed. We also discuss trust in the public sphere and its role, focusing on the trust attributed to institutions, emphasizing the institution of education. It was necessary to briefly analyze the terms that refer to 'distrust' and 'mistrust.' In the remainder of the chapter, the permacrisis and its weight is extensively analyzed through the literature review in conjunction with the crisis of trust. This chapter concludes by describing some vital and influential points in the literature review on identity, focusing on professional identity. The third (3rd) chapter presents the methodology of this research, mixed methods research, which combines quantitative and qualitative approaches. The choice of questionnaire and interview as the research data collection tools for this research is justified. The two populations' study and research questions are identified and justified. In addition, the sample (reference population) for the quantitative approach is also identified. Subsequently, the research procedure is described, and the prerequisites set and adhered to for this research to be characterized by reliability and validity are listed. In the fourth (4th) chapter, the process of processing and analysis of the data, as obtained from the research data collection tools, the questionnaire, and the interview, is presented for both populations, teachers, and primary school headteachers are assigned to school units (Primary Education) located in the Region of Western Greece. We consider that a coherent narrative is reflected in the presentation of the findings in terms of the findings produced by the "two worlds," that of the quantitative and that of the qualitative approach, which seem to be different but have common elements between them and of course complement each other. More specifically, the sample's characteristics and the survey's findings, which derive from the quantitative and qualitative approaches, are presented first. Then, the data analyses are presented, which include correlations, regressions, and comparisons of means. The fifth (5th) chapter contains the interpretation of the findings and the discussion. The sixth (6th) chapter includes the conclusions of this thesis as they emerged from our study, answering the research questions posed. It also suggests future research avenues. After the completion of the last chapter, the articles, and the literature, both Greek and international, studied are listed. The appendices are at the end of this thesis.
