The aim of this study was to cover the lack of knowledge concerning the biology and ecology of the sublittoral crab Portumnus latipes and the midlittoral crab P. lysianassa, which inhabit two consecutive but different ecological zones of the soft substratum. The addition of the study for semiterrestrial species Ocypode cursor and the terrestrial Gecarcinus lateralis, had a further objective of investigating the gradual morphological adaptations of the crabs during the evolutionary transition from marine to terrestrial environments. For the study concerning P. lysianassa monthly samplings were carried out in Vourvourou beach from January 2003 until March 2004, while seasonal samplings were carried out during the period 2004 to 2005 in the shore of Vassova lagoon after the verification that a dense population of P. lysianassa was kept there, in order to compare the density of this population with that of the population at Vourvourou. The samplings were carried out with hauls along the lower midlittoral zone with a specially designed triangular dredge. For the study of P. latipes monthly samplings were carried out in Anoiktos bay (south of Komotini) during the period March 2003 - March 2005. The hauls were conducted on the lower midlittoral zone (with the same triangular dredge), where this species ascents opportunistically, when the wind is minimal. The samples of O. cursor were collected from shores of Rhodos and Cyprus islands in August 2004 and 2005, respectively. In each of the ecological zones which constitute the habitat of the three species which were studied, macrofauna samples were also taken (with a metallic frame of 400 cm2 surface) for the identification of the composition of the corresponding benthic assemblages. In each of the three ecological zones further samplings of meiofauna and sediment were carried out. Throughout this research, the feeding habits of these three species, during the same season (summer), were analyzed and compared for the first time. Thus, it was revealed that these species are omnivorous and the diet of the two Portumnus species consists mainly of marine invertebrates and macroalgae detritus, while the one of O. cursor consists mainly of terrestrial species (ants). The diet of P. lysiannasa is variable, in some contexts, from region to region during the same season, but also from season to season in the same region. The same seems to apply in P. latipes, at least from season to season in the same region. Moreover, the morphological adaptive alterations evolved in the four examined species (P. latipes, P. lysianassa, O. cursor and G. lateralis) in order to meet relevant environmental requirements, were studied and compared and it was demonstrated that they have a gradual adaptation from the marine towards the terrestrial environment. P. latipes (sublittoral – marine) P. lysianassa (midlittoral – marine) O. cursor (supralittoral – semi-terrestrial) G. lateralis (terrestrial). In addition, in the two Portumnus species the period of appearance of ovigerous individuals, and the larval and post-larval development were also studied and compared. In conclusion, we could say that the total life cycle of both species of Portumnus seems to be completed within fifteen months, while its post-larval phase is completed in about a year.
