This work focuses on case-based learning environments on the web and analyzes the potential of a specific method of cognitive scaffolding based on question prompts that direct students toward a certain way of processing the learning material. The eCASE learning environment was developed for the purpose of the study, applying the case method in ill-structured domains. The analysis of the impact of the proposed scaffolding method on learning revealed that the embedding of context-oriented question prompts in a computer-supported learning environment can enhance the learning outcomes in terms of domain conceptual knowledge acquisition and knowledge transfer in a new situation. However, during a series of conducted experiments it became obvious that various factors can affect the impact of question prompts on learning. 1.
