The present PhD thesis explores the potential of systematic observation as an alternative method of assessing oral performance in English as a lingua franca within the broader framework of The Greek state secondary school. For the accomplishment of the research goal, a mixed-methods approach is adopted, comprising both quantitative and qualitative instruments, such as a questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, focus groups and field observations. EFL teachers' and students' views and attitudes before and after the implementation of an alternative model of assessment based on systematic observation of oral performance in English as well as the potential of observation per se as a method of assessing communicative speaking skills and accommodation strategies constitute primary research questions of the present thesis.
