The Alamani Saints of Cyprus according: to sources and local tradition

Abstract

One of the problems of the Cyprus Hagiology, which many historians, researchers, columnists and local tradition dealt with, was the issue of the Alamani saints of Cyprus. According to sources, the foreign saints who were named Alemans amount to 300. Leontio Mahera, a Cypriot columnist, writes that the above mentioned saints came to Cyprus from Syropalestine after this region had been occupied by the Saracens.The reference to the arrival of 300 saints led the Latin historians, Florio Voustronio and Etienne De Louzinian, refer deliberately and maliciously in their work that those particular saints were Latin Christians who came from Germany and other Western countries. They arrived in Cyprus during the Crusades, lived in several areas of the island, were honoured by the orthodox people of Cyprus and placed in Cyprus Hagiology although they were not orthodox themselves.The later historians of Cyprus using the work of the above mentioned Latin historians, as if it was their own source, ref ...
