Handmade terracotta archaic figurines from the Athenian Acropolis and the Nymph Sanctuary at the South Slope of the Acropolis
Abstract
Handmade terracotta figurines of the archaic period from the Athenian Acropolis and the Nymph Sanctuary at the South Slope of the Acropolis consist an important part of the terracotta art evolution even from Bronze Age. The bibliographically known figurines as Primitives were separated in six groups according to their morphological characteristics. The handmade figurines of our catalogue have been found during the big excavations which took place during the 19th and 20th century on the Hill as well as from the excavation at the Nymph Sanctuary at the Acropolis south slope. The archaic handmade terracotta figurines from the Acropolis and the Nymph Sanctuary are typical examples of Attic terracotta art of this period. Many shrines dedicated to female goddesses (Athena, Artemis, Demeter and Kore, Aphrodite, Nymph, Semnes, Erinyes) in the Athenian archaic places as well as Attic archaic sanctuaries contain rich examples of this art, Acropolis and its slopes, ancient Agora, Kerameikos, Eleu ...
