MESOZOOPLANKTON ECOLOGY IN SARONIKOS GULF (GREECE)
Abstract
IN ORDER TO STUDY THE ECOLOGY OF MESOZOOPLANKTON IN SARONIKOS GULF, MONTHLY SAMPLES WERE COLLECTED FOR A TWO-YEAR PERIOD, 1984-1985, IN 5 STATIONS LOCATED IN HYDROLOGICALLY DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE GULF, IN THE 0-50 M LAYER AND AT THESURFACE. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS DISTINGUISHED TWO COMMUNITIES, ONE AT ELEFSIS BAY AND THE OTHER IN THE MAIN SARONIKOS GULF, DIFFERING IN THE FLUNCTUATIONSOF ZOOPLANKTON BIOMASS AND DENSITY, IN THE ANNUAL CYCLE OF ITS COMPOSITION, IN THE SPECIES ASSEMBLAGES AND IN THE STRUCTURE OF THE COMMUNITIES. THESE DIFFERENCES ARE DUE TO THE EFFECT OF POLLUTION IN ELEFSIS BAY WHICH IS THE DOMINANT ENVIRONMENTAL FACTOR IN THE AREA, WHILE IN THE MAIN SARONIKOS GULF, THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS TEMPERATURE, FOLLOWED BY THE INFLUENCE OF THE AEGEANSEA, FOOD (PHYTOPLANKTON) AND TOPOGRAPHY. A DIFFERENTIATION WAS ALSO OBSERVED BETWEEN THE ZOOPLANKTON OF THE SURFACE AND THAT OF THE 0-50 M LAYER.
