The subject of this work is the solution of dislocation, crack and notch problems within the framework of Couple-Stress and Dipolar Gradient Elasticity. Chapter 1: Introduction to the General Toupin - Mindlin’s Dipolar Gradient Elasticity. Chapter 2: Couple-Stress Elasticity Theory. The basic equations of Couple-Stress Elasticity are briefly presented. The cases of plane and antiplane strain are also examined. Chapter 3: Dipolar Gradient Elasticity Theory. The basic equations of Dipolar Gradient Elasticity are briefly presented. The cases of plane and antiplane strain are also examined. Chapter 4: Solution of Crack Problems in Couple-Stress Elasticity. The Technique of Distributed Dislocations proved to be in the past an effective approach in studying crack problems within classical elasticity. The present work is intended to extend this technique in studying crack problems within couple-stress elasticity, i.e. within a theory accounting for effects of microstructure. This extension is not an obvious one since rotations and couple- stresses are involved in the theory employed to analyze the crack problems. The technique is introduced here to study finite-length cracks under remotely applied plane and antiplane strain loadings (mode I, mode II and mode III cases). The mode I crack is modeled by a continuous distribution of jump dislocations and wedge disclinations, whereas the mode II and mode III cracks are modeled by a continuous distribution of glide and screw dislocations, respectively, that create both standard stresses and couple stresses in the body. It is shown that the mode I case is governed by a coupled system of singular integral equations with both Cauchy-type and logarithmic kernels. The mode II case is governed by a singular integral equation with a more complicated kernel than that in classical elasticity. The numerical solution of the singular integral equations shows that a cracked material governed by couple-stress elasticity behaves in a more rigid way (having increased stiffness) as compared to a material governed by classical elasticity. Also, the stress level at the crack-tip region is appreciably higher than the one predicted by classical elasticity. Finally, in the mode III case the corresponding governing integral equation is hypersingular with a cubic singularity. This equation is solved by analytical considerations on Hadamard finite-part integrals and a numerical treatment. The results in the mode III case for the crack-face displacement and the near-tip stress show significant departure from the predictions of classical fracture mechanics. Chapter 5: Solution of Crack Problems in Dipolar Gradient Elasticity. In this Chapter, the elastic stress and displacement fields around the tips of a finite-length crack, are determined in a microstructured solid under remotely applied plane-strain loading (mode I and II cases). The material microstructure is modelled through the Toupin-Mindlin theory of dipolar gradient elasticity. First, a near-tip asymptotic solution is obtained by the Knein-Williams technique. Then, we attack the complete boundary value problem in an effort to obtain a full-field solution. Hypersingular integral equations with a cubic singularity are formulated with the aid of the Fourier transform. These equations are solved by analytical considerations on Hadamard finite-part integrals and a numerical treatment. The results show significant departure from the predictions of standard fracture mechanics. In view of these results, it seems that the classical theory of elasticity is inadequate to analyze crack problems in microstructured materials. Indeed, the present results indicate that the stress distribution ahead of the crack tip exhibits a local maximum that is bounded. Also, the cracked solid governed by form II of dipolar gradient elasticity behaves in a more rigid way (having increased stiffness) as compared to a solid governed by classical elasticity. Further, the strain field is bounded at the crack-tip vicinity. Finally, we note that despite the hypersingular character of stress, it turns out that the J-integral (energy release rate) remains bounded. The ratio J/Jclas, where Jclas is the expression of the J-integral in classical elastic fracture mechanics, decreases monotonically with increasing values of c1/2/a (c1/2 is the characteristic length of the material). This finding shows that the gradient theory predicts a strengthening effect since a reduction of the crack driving force (‘stress concentration’) takes place as the material microstructure becomes more pronounced. Chapter 6: The Notch Problem in Dipolar Gradient Elasticity. In this Chapter, we deal with the asymptotic problem of an infinite notch in a body with microstructure under remotely applied plane and antiplane loadings. The problem is formulated within the framework of the Toupin-Mindlin’s generalized continuum theory of dipolar gradient elasticity. The faces of the notch are considered to be traction-free and a boundary-layer approach is followed. The boundary value problem is attacked with the asymptotic Knein-Williams technique. Our analysis leads to an eigenvalue problem, which, along with the restriction of a bounded potential energy, provides the asymptotic fields. The cases of a crack and a half-space are analyzed in detail as limit cases of the general notch problem. The results show significant departure from the predictions of the standard fracture mechanics. Chapter 7: The Notch Problem in Couple-Stress Elasticity. In this Chapter, the asymptotic problem of an infinite notch under remotely applied plane loadings is studied within the framework of the couple-stress elasticity theory. The boundary value problem is attacked again with the asymptotic Knein-Williams technique. The cases of a crack and a half-space are analyzed in detail as limit cases of the general notch problem. The results show significant departure from the predictions of the standard fracture mechanics.
