Seismic design of steel structures by using equivalent modal damping ratios or modal strength reduction factors

Abstract

A method for seismic design of steel structure based on equivalent modal damping ratios is presented. According to this method the maximum seismic response of a steel structure is obtained by using spectrum analysis and the equivalent modal damping ratios. The basic idea of the method is the construction of an equivalent linear multi-degree-of-freedom structure than can reproduce the seismic response of an original nonlinear multi-degree-of-freedom structure More specifically, the equivalent linear structure has the same mass and initial stiffness with the original nonlinear structure and modal damping ratios that represent the work done by all types of nonlinear deformations. These equivalent modal damping ratios for the first few modes are computed as functions of deformation and damage of the structure and are obtained by first iteratively constructing a frequency response transfer function till it satisfies specific smoothness criteria and then by solving a system of nonlinear alge ...
