Depictions of educational reality in traditional press of the period 1870-1911

Abstract

With this thesis is provided material on modern Greek education through press publications in the period 1870-1911. Newspaper reading allowed access to education news in an attempt to provide answers to specific research questions. The secondary research material was drawn with specific criteria from nine Athenian newspapers. Content analysis and the historical interpretive approach were chosen as the typology of analysis. The research was not exhausted at the level of ascertaining the facts, but proceeded to their historical-interpretive meaning, expanding the possibilities of understanding the field of education, through content analysis, the thematic categorization of the publications, from which interesting facts are deduced. The conclusions confirm the function of the press with the respective socio-historical context, but also the impression it expresses as a "shaper" of public opinion towards educational matters.
