The topic of this doctoral dissertation is concerned with the solution of electromagnetic (EM) boundary-value problems in elliptical-cylindrical and spheroidal configurations. Therefore, its content is organized along two directions: the first studies the propagation of EM waves in elliptical-circular and circular-elliptical metallic waveguides. The second investigates the EM scattering from spheroids with anisotropic material properties. The first chapter is introductory and presents general information on the coordinate systems and the special mathematical functions involved in the solution of problems in elliptical and spheroidal configurations. In the second chapter, we develop an efficient and accurate method for the calculation of the cutoff wavenumbers of coaxial elliptical-circular and circular-elliptical metallic waveguides. For small values of the eccentricity h of the waveguide’s elliptical wall—i.e., when its cross section approaches the circular shape—, closed form formulas are extracted for the cutoff wavenumbers in the form x_{nm}(h)=x_{nm}^{(0)} [1+g_{nm}^{(2)} h^2+g_{nm}^{(4)} h^4+O(h^6)], where the coefficients g_{nm}^{(2)} and g_{nm}^{(4)} are given by simple algebraic expressions, which are independent of h and do not require the computation of Mathieu functions, while x_{nm}^{(0)} corresponds to the cutoff wavenumbers of the coaxial circular metallic waveguide. The resulting formulas are valid for every different value of the indices n and m, corresponding to every higher-order TΜ_{nm} or TE_{nm} mode. The efficiency and accuracy of the developed solution are checked by comparisons with the general exact solution of the problem, and numerical results are given for the cutoff wavenumbers of various higher-order modes. The third chapter is devoted to the development of two independent methods for the calculation of EM scattering from anisotropic spheroids. The first is a formal series solution employing a formulation based on the expansion of the fields in terms of spheroidal eigenvectors. By imposing the boundary conditions at the spheroid's surface, a system of linear equations is obtained that leads to the solution of the problem. The second method is a shape perturbation technique which is valid for small values of the spheroid's eccentricity h. In this case, the spheroid is treated as a perturbation of the respective sphere and simple algebraic expressions for the scattering cross sections are obtained, having the general form S(h)=S^{(0)} [1+g^{(2)} h^2+g^{(4)} h^4+O(h^6)]. Coefficients g^{(2)} and g^{(4)} are independent of h and do not require the computation of the spheroidal functions, while S^{(0)} corresponds to the scattering from the non perturbed anisotropic sphere. Both methods employ a set of discrete spherical eigenvectors for the expansion of the fields in the anisotropic region. The validity of the formal series solution is verified by comparing results with two other independent computational tools. Once the correctness of the method is established, it is used as reference for testing the results of the shape perturbation technique, in order to determine the range of values of the eccentricity for which the latter can be used with acceptable error. Comparisons are performed regarding the efficiency of the two developed methods, and numerical results are given for different kinds of anisotropy.
