Synthesis, characterization and properties of rod - coil copolymers
Abstract
The synthesis of rod coil diblock and tnblock copolymers that contain a conjugatedoligomer as the rigid rod block is presented in this thesis The first step was to synthesizethe conjugated segments that consisted of substituted ohgo(p phenylenes) ohgo(pphenylene ethynylenes) or ohgofluorenes These species had the ability to emit lightunder proper excitation Subsequently the aforementioned rods were subjected to α ωfunctionalization in order to be used as macroimtiators for the polymerization of variousvinyl monomers such as styrene and acrylates The method that we utilized for thatpurpose was the Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) The syntheses ofcopolymers were carried out under different reaction conditions so as to control thepolymerization for each system and to achieve regularity in chemical structure andarchitecture of the final copolymers The products were characterized by nuclearmagnetic resonance spectroscopy (Ή NMR 13C NMR) and size exclusionchromatography The optica ...
