This Ph.D. thesis was carried out during the period 2002-2008 at the Photonics Communications Research Laboratory, School of Electrical & Computer Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, under the supervision of Professor Hercules Avramopoulos. The main subject of the present Ph.D. is the design and implementation of novel, complex and powerful optical sub-systems capable at performing demanding applications for the next generation optical node architectures. The thesis identifies the capability of interferometric optical gates to perform all basic functionalities of optical signal processing, including Boolean logic, multiplexing and demultiplexing, wavelength conversion and regeneration. Taking into account the remarkable advance in hybrid and monolithic integration for optical logic gates, offering performance and cost advantages in the optical systems implementation, the thesis considers the integrated interferometric optical gates as the perfect candidate for the equivalent of the electronic transistor. As such, they are treated as the fundamental building blocks in order to build larger scale optical sub-systems with enhanced operational functionalities. The proposed optical sub-systems of this thesis are completely based on integrated interferometric optical gates and are demonstrated to perform demanding network-key applications, such as 3R burst mode regeneration, thus making a first step towards optical VLSI. The thesis discusses the influence of designing complex optical systems based only on integrated optical gates to the progress of optical integration technology and reports the advancements on integrating multi-element gates on a single chip. Within this context, the present Ph.D. thesis is divided in three major sections: it first explores the operational capabilities of the optical interferometric gates by simulating them in demanding functions, such as the Boolean XOR and the 2R regeneration. To do this, a mathematical model of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer using semiconductor optical amplifiers is deployed. Simulation results allow for properly choosing the optimum set of parameters for operational speeds at 40 Gb/s and beyond. The second section focuses on expanding the functionality potential of optical logic gates, by investigating the operational features of a SOA-based Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (SOA-MZI) with unequal splitting ratio couplers, configured to operate as a self-switch. The scheme is found to operate as a hard-limiter, suitable for implementing a novel 2R burst mode regenerator (2R BMR) using a single integrated optical gate. The circuit is capable of operating error-free with 40 Gb/s variable length, asynchronous optical data packets that exhibit up to 9 dB packet-to-packet power variation. Moreover, a network scenario is deployed as a straightforward way to reduce the OBS network complexity and cost by using a number of consecutive 2R BMRs for burst power equalization, before full 3R burst mode regeneration is required. Such concept will only be feasible if 2R BMRs can be shown to be capable of successively regenerating bursts error-free. The thesis demonstrates a first attempt to examine the number of successive, error-free regenerations that can be performed with the single MZI, 2R BMR using a loop experiment. The results obtained for 10 Gb/s 2¹⁵-1 PRBS data streams with RZ format of 8ps pulsewidth, report that error-free regeneration was possible even after six recirculations. The third section involves the demonstration of a novel, complex and powerful optical sub-system capable at performing a demanding application, as well as the advancements of optical integration technology. The optical packet and burst switching have been introduced as the most competent technologies for third-generation optical networks, while the key element for the realization of burst switched networks is the Burst Mode Receivers. Within this context, the thesis demonstrates the first all-optical 3R Burst Mode Receiver operating error-free with 40Gb/s variable length, asynchronous optical data packets that exhibit up to 9 dB packet-to-packet power variation. The circuit is completely based upon hybridly integrated Mach-Zehnder Interferometric (MZI) switches as it employs four cascaded MZIs, each one performing a different functionality. This section also describes the integration process of the first quadruple SOA-MZI integrated chip, containing four integrated mach-Zehnder interferometers as well as the integration of the first 3R BMR sub-system on a single chip.
