Large bowel operations often include by an end-to-end anastomosis in order to maintain the continuity of the peptic system. Leakage of colonic anastomosis is a serious postoperative complication that increases morbidity and mortality rates. Several drugs that have been studied were found to have negative impact on the anastomotic integrity. Imatinib mesylate is a new chemotherapeutic agent which is used against chronic myelogenous leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Aim of this experimental study was to investigate the possible negative effect of Imatinib mesylate on the colonic anastomosis. Sixty Wistar rats were divided into two groups of thirty animals each group. The study group was given 50 mg/Kg BW/d Imatinib by gavage starting one-week prior the operation and throughout the experiment. Placebo was administered to the control group in equal amounts.
