STUDY OF THE SOFT E+E- PAIR PRODUCTION IN Π-P INTERACTIONS AT 280GEV/C USING THE OMEGA SPECTROMETER AT CERN

Abstract

THE RESULTS OF THIS THESIS ARE BASED ON THE ANALYSIS OF THE WA83/SOPHIE EXPERIMENT, WHOSE AIM WAS TO INVESTIGATE THE PRODUCTION OF SOFT PHOTONS IN HARDONIC COLLISIONS Π-P AΤ 280GEV/C. IT HAS BEEN REFORMED AT THE CERN - SPS ACCELERATOR,USING THE OMEGA SPECTROMETER EQUIPPED WITH AN ONE METER LONG HYDROGEN TARGETAND TWO ELECTROMAGNETIC CALORIMETERS. THE EXPERIMENT HAS PUBLISHED RESULTS FROM THE ANALYSIS OF PHOTONS MEASURED BY THE PLUG FORWARD ELECTROMAGNETIC CALORIMETER, INSIDE A CONE OF 20MRAD HALF ANGLE AROUND THE BEAM DIRECTION. AN EXCESS OF DIRECTLY PRODUCED SOFT PHOTONS BY A FACTOR 7.9+-1.4 OVER THE QED BREMSSTRAHLUNG PREDICTION HAS BEEN MEASURED IN THE LOW ENERGY (0.2<=EΓ<=1GEV) AND LOW PΤ(<10MEV/C) KINEMATIC REGION. THE PRESENT ANALYSIS IS BASED ON THE SAMPLE OF PHOTONS MATERIALISED TO E+E- PAIRS INSIDE THE 1 METER LONG HYDROGEN TARGET AND MEASURED AS VS BY THE SPECTROMETER.
