Health is the most important asset of life, ensuring the well-being of society as well as its potential to develop through the interaction of its members. In Greece, both the institutional and social framework for providing health services is clearly defined, ensuring the seamless delivery of healthcare services to the broader social community. Often, healthcare policies misinterpret the uniqueness of health as a good, associating it with other goods of the economic system, producing numerous externalities that are harmful to both to public health and social cohesion. Furthermore, the successive crises (economic, migratory, pandemic, energy) have plagued the global reality for decades, giving market-driven and measurable dimensions to the good of health, significantly complicating its free provision to those in need. At the dawn of an uncertain situation for health, the economic exploitation of health by stakeholders (healthcare providers) comes into play, often producing phenomena of corruption in the provision of healthcare services. One of the most significant phenomena, with a direct and vital impact on society and the economy, is bribery – or the well-known "fakelaki". The "fakelaki", with historical roots in Eastern and Balkan countries and as a consequence of the aforementioned crises, tends to be seen as a necessary fee for accessing a variety of state services. Building on previous research and the intensification of the development of this social phenomenon, which has consistently affected the health of citizens, every aspect of the corruption phenomenon known as the "fakelaki" has been analyzed, thoroughly investigating the pathology of the healthcare system. The first part of the dissertation provides an extensive theoretical approach and analysis of the key concepts related to health, the models and functioning of healthcare systems, as well as a detailed analysis of the concepts of corruption and the shadow economy, adapting them to the healthcare sector. This is followed by an analysis of the "fakelaki" phenomenon, which constitutes the main subject matter of the doctoral dissertation. The investigation of this phenomenon extends to the empirical part of the dissertation, through research conducted on a population sample from the major urban cities of the country, drawing significant conclusions about the pathological phenomenon that undermines health, ethics, and the values of society.![]() | Κατεβάστε τη διατριβή σε μορφή PDF (4.32 MB)
