INVESTIGATIONS OF THE BASE AND PRECIOUS METALS OF THE CIRCUM RHODOPE BELT IN THRACE
Abstract
THE PRESENT THESIS DEALS WITH THE MINERALIZATIONS OF THE CIRCUM RHODOPE BELT (CRB) IN THRACE. THIS BELT WHICH CONSISTS MAINLY OF MESOZOIC ROCKS, IS DIVIDED IN TWO UNITS: THE MAKRI AND THE DRYMOS-MELIA UNIT. THE MAKRI UNIT (TRIASSIC-LATE JURASSIC) IS DISTINGUISHED IN TWO SERIES: THE LOWER METASEDIMENTARY SERIES (METACONGLOMERATES, METAGRAYWACKES, METAQUARTZITES, MARBLES, DOLOMITES, CALC-SCHISTS) AND THE UPPER METAVOLCANOSEDIMENTARY SERIES (GREENSCHISTS, CHLORITE SCHISTS, TALC SCHISTS, MICA SCHISTS AND QUARTZITES). BASIC TO INTERMEDIATE VOLCANICS (LAVAS AND PYROCLASTICS) MAKE THE LOWER PART OF THE JURASSIC TO EARLY CRETACEOUS DRYMOS-MELIA UNIT, WHILE PHYLLITES ARE ENCOUNTERED IN THE UPPER PART OF THE UNIT. VERY LOW TO LOW GRADE METAMORPHISM CHARACTERIZES BOTH OF THESE UNITS. PLUTONIC AND VOLCANIC ROCKS OF TERTIARY AGE HAVE PENETRATED BOTH THE MESOZOIC ROCKS OF THE CRB AND THE RHODOPE MASSIF IN THRACE.
