This dissertation explores the use of the Patristic Tradition among the first Greek Evangelicals during the 1858-1911 period, based on an extensive archival research. The first part of the dissertation demonstrates that the dialectic with the Patristic Tradition is a common and inherent (and not “occasional” or “marginal”) practice of the Reformation since its very beginning in the 16th century, as the first Reformers, and especially Luther and Calvin, interacted extensively with the Church Fathers in their writings. This then proves clearly that the real meaning of Sola Scriptura is not the rejection of Tradition, but a critical reception of and creative dialectic with her. Thus, in the context of this dialectic, the Reformers expressed many times their appreciation of the Fathers, exegeted the Bible in dialogue with them, underlined that their faith was in line with the original faith of the Fathers, and also identified points on which they considered that the teaching of the Roma ...
Thus, in the context of this dialectic, the Reformers expressed many times their appreciation of the Fathers, exegeted the Bible in dialogue with them, underlined that their faith was in line with the original faith of the Fathers, and also identified points on which they considered that the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church had deviated, not just from the Bible, but also from the Fathers. In other cases, they criticized the Fathers in cases where they identified contradictions, either between the Fathers themselves, or between them and the Bible, which in any case had the final authority for the Reformers. The second part of this dissertation explores how this spirit of appreciation and critical reception of the Patristic Tradition was also a characteristic of the first Greek Evangelicals. Although they lived and wrote under particularly difficult conditions, the first Greek Evangelicals interacted extensively with the Fathers (more than 1,000 references to them have been identified), expressed repeatedly their admiration and appreciation for the Fathers, especially those of the first five centuries, and particularly the Eastern Fathers (esp. St. John Chrysostom). Hence, the first Greek Evangelicals published Patristic texts, exegeted the Bible in dialogue with the Fathers (pioneering in the synthesis of Patristic and historical-critical Biblical hermeneutics in Greece), highlighted their own agreement with them, and underlined points which they identified as deviations of the Orthodox Church of their era from the Patristic teaching. In some cases, they also expressed their criticism to the Fathers themselves.Among the various theological issues that the first Greek Evangelicals discussed as they dialogued with the Fathers, one that is particularly interesting is that of the relationship between Scripture and Tradition. Their writings on this topic reveal some important points of convergence between Evangelical and Orthodox theology (despite their particular differences), which can also be considered as contributions to the contemporary ecumenical reflection. Nevertheless, on other issues that were studied (not least on ecclesiological issues such as baptism, eucharist and ministry) it is the differences rather than convergences that stand out in their writings. The third part of the dissertation evaluates the methodology and the topics selected by the first Greek Evangelicals in their dialectic with the Patristic Tradition. Despite the methodological problems identified in various parts of their writings, it is nevertheless undisputable that this whole dialectic constitutes a significant contribution for the contemporary ecumenical reflection, not only historically (by revealing the first historical attempt for ecumenical approach and theological interaction between Orthodox and Evangelicals in Greece), but also theologically, both in the context of the specific theological issues that were studied (especially on the relationship between Scripture and Tradition), and as an overall stance towards the Church Fathers: as this study highlights, the fact that the Fathers are the common ground that all churches share, demonstrates their great importance for the development of the contemporary ecumenical movement.
