The effect of sponsorship on the behavior of both the favour and the rival team fans

Abstract

Companies invest in sponsorships in order to promote their products and services and attract specific target groups. Building brand equity (Cornwell, Roy and Steinard, 2001) and sales augmentation Gwinner and Swanson, 2003) are the main incentives for such investments. Sports have attracted most of sponsorship expenditure (Davies, Veloutsou and Costa, 2006) and this is due to the belief that fans tend to transfer the positive feelings that they hold towards their favorite team to sponsors (Dalakas and Levin, 2005). A concept inextricably linked to sport teams is rivalry. However, to date there are very few studies in the sponsorship literature that have taken this factor into account.
