The sense of presence is the study object of a modern research field; although the factors that affect it are not fully known so far, the majority of studies conclude that it both enhances learning and motivates learners. An important issue that has risen, as a result, is the evaluation of the sense of presence: questionnaires are the most common methods for measuring it. The objective of this dissertation is to study into the factors that contribute to the creation of a high sense of presence to the users of an Educational Virtual Environment which is simulating an earthquake at a school. Three groups of the 6th Class of Primary School students were trained using three different educational means (brochure, multimedia application and virtual environment) so that they could exhibit an appropriate seismic behaviour. After two days the students applied the acquired knowledge interacting with a virtual environment witch was simulating a school building during an earthquake. The results of ...
The results of this research showed that all the students experienced a high level of sense of presence. The users of the given Educational Virtual Environment were highly successful at appropriate seismic behaviour, as well as, retaining the knowledge gained, compared with students who used the brochures and the multimedia application. The study shows that Educational Virtual Environments for training students how to react properly in case of natural disasters, as an earthquake, and create high levels of presence, constitute in themselves strong learning motives, and as such, the knowledge acquired through them is sound and long lasting.
