ETHNO-REGIONAL IDENTITY: THE CASE OF PONTIAN GREEKS

Abstract

THE DISSERTATION EXAMINES THE CAUSES AND CONDITIONS OF THE FORMATION AND SUBSEQUENT EVOLUTION OF THE COLLECTIVE IDENTITY OF PONTIAN GREEKS IN GREECE FROM THE 1920S. IN THE 1920S MORE THAN 230,000 PONTIAN GREEKS TOOK REFUGE IN GREECE. THE COLLECTIVE IDENTITY OF THIS POPULATION IN GREECE COULD BE DEFINED BY THE TERM ETHNO-REGIONAL. THIS COLLECTIVE IDENTITY IS NOT A NATIONAL OR ETHNIC IDENTITY, BECAUSE THE GROUP IS PART OF A LARGER NATION, THE GREEK NATION, ANDIT IS NOT REGIONAL, BECAUSE THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA OF REFERENCE HAS BEEN LOST. THE GROUP MIGRATED EN MASSE FROM THEIR PLACE OF ORIGIN AND ARE NOT ABLE TO RETURN EN MASSE. THE METHODOLOGY USED INCLUDED 92 FACE-TO-FACE INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED IN 1989 WITH MEMBERS OF THE DIFFERENT GENERATIONS OF PONTIAN GREEKS. THE BIOGRAPHICAL APPROACH WAS USED IN THESE INTERVIEWS.
