There is an examination of the artistic pursuits which were a result of the economic and commercial interest Europeans showed towards countries of the Orient: India and later China. Also, there is a commentary of works expressing the political developments in France. Chapter 3 (19th century) looks at portraits of powerful chess players and works which arose from the salons, clubs, tournaments and coffee houses as well as the clergy’s occupation with the black and white squares. The winner’s and loser’s psychological reactions are analyzed. One can suppose the portrait of the winner in matches between male figures depicts the person who commissioned the painting and possibly an individual of higher social standing than the opponent. There is an analysis of paintings of the period of The Thirty Years’ War as well as the eighteenth century, which was a storehouse of imagination for nineteenth and twentieth century artists. Chapter 4 (20th century) examines the radiance of the Soviet School and the effects of chess having become more widely known. A study of a variety of works with chess as their subject is made and it reflects new currents or new interpretations of modern movements in the twentieth century, but there is also a description of the similarity in conception of the motif of concentrated players. In this chapter are examined Sargent’s chess players and Vieira da Silva’s chess boards. Magritte’s pawns are examined in a separate unit. There is also an examination of de Chirico’s chess boards in his metaphysical art. The dynamics of moves in chess and the intensity the players project was a source of inspiration for Baumeister and Dossi. With his knowledge of contemporary physics, Vasarély and Escher resorted to the familiar to him road of the theory of Chaos and fractals. A separate unit is that of Marcel Duchamp’s circle through which we are transported to a group of artists who used to play chess and introduced the game in their work in various ways. The artists’ influence on modern movements proves that the world of chess left indelible marks on art, as the mode of thinking of the game dramatically influenced artistic creation.
