EVALUATION OF QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS OF ION-SELECTIVE ELECTRODES AND KINETIC ANALYSES WITH SYSTEMS CONTROLLED BY MICROCOMPUTERS

Abstract

THE CONSTRUCTION OF TWO COMPUTERISED POTENTIOMETRIC SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED. THESE TWO SYSTEMS CONSIST OF COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE UNITS AND HOMEBUILT INTERFACE CIRCUITS. THE FIRST SYSTEM, CONTROLLED BY AN ALTAIR 8800B MICROCOMPUTER IS USED FOR AN AUTOMATED, RAPID EVALUATION OF CERTAIN CRUSIAL QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS OF ION-SELECTIVE ELECTRODES. THE SECOND SYSTEM, CONTROLLED BY AN AMSTRAD CPC-6128 MICROCOMPUTER, IS USED EXCLUSIVELY FOR KINETIC STUDIES AND KINETIC ANALYSIS WITH ISES. AS FAR AS THE FIRST SYSTEM IS CONCERNED, CONTROL PROGRAMS WERE DEVELOPED, CAPABLE OF DOING THE FOLLOWING TASKS: EVALUATION OF DETECTION LIMITS AND POTENTIOMETRIC SELECTIVITY COEFFICIENTS TOWARDS DIVERSE IONS, AUTOMATIC RECORDING OF E-PH CURVES, DETERMINATION OF THE THERMAL HYSTERISIS OF ISES-REFERENCE ELECTRODE PAIRS, MONITORING OF ISES' POTENTIAL FOR EVALUATING MEDIUM-TERM DRIFT BEHAVIOUR AND ESTIMATION OF THE ISES' TIME CONSTANT, WHEN THEY ARE SUBJECTED TO A STEP-CHANGE OF THE ACTIVITY OF THE PRIMARY ION.
