This doctoral dissertation’s main focus is the examination of theater life in Thessaloniki, Greece, during the transition to democracy (a period widely known as Metapolitefsi). This study was achieved through the documentation of the activity of four professional troupes that were part of the so-called “Free Theater” (Elefthero Theatro) – The Thessaloniki Theatrical Laboratory / Theatriko Ergastiri Thessalonikis, the Thessaloniki Café-Theater / Kafe-Theatro Thessalonikis, the Dramatic Arts Revue / Epitheorisi Dramatikis Technis, and the “Techni’s” Experimental Scene / Piramatiki Skini tis Tehnis – and the assessment of a journey towards a pluralistic theater culture. The dissertation comprises two volumes: The first volume is articulated in three parts, the first being an overview of Post-War theater life in Thessaloniki. The key points that emerge from this overview are the following: the initial lack of a stable theater activity, the crucial establishment of the National Theatre of Northern Greece (NTNG) and the imprint it left on the city, the presence of Kyriazis Haratsaris, and the trajectory of the theater lab of “Techni” from its inception to the year 1974 – a route that is particularly important for the devolpment of this study. The second part consists of three chapters. The first chapter presents a panorama of the repertoire of the four aforementioned troupes, as well as extensive reference to their trajectory. In the second part, the physiognomy of the troupes, the choices they put forward in terms of dramatology, their structure and function, financial sustainability, parallel activity, and vision of the kind of theatre they wish to serve, are thoroughly scrutinized. Lastly, the third chapter is devoted to both Greek and international tours of these theater companies, but also to their other efforts to engage with outreach mechanisms by and large. The third part crystallizes the conclusions of this study, which in turn reflect upon different parameters of theater life, such as: the revitalization of the repertoire by virtue of these troupes’ pursuits; the rise and decline of the theater companies; the stages that were employed by the companies on the way; the actors’ training; the alternative troupes as artists’ incubators and the inescapable path paved by the NTNG and Athens; and the lack of collaboration between the troupes. The second volume contains a full catalog of the productions (commonly referred to as parastasiographia) and a full list of reviews of the performances of these four theater companies, in a time frame ranging from 1975 to 2000, as well as tables with statistical data. Through this critical tracing of the theater activity in Thessaloniki, the study examines the gradual transition from radical politicization and social inquiries to their ventures in psychography and the aesthetical concerns that take their distance from militant art. The same transition is also located in the way these companies are structured and function, in a period when the era’s main demand for politicization encourages acts of collective stage directing and theater administration (see the case of Theatriko Ergastiri). The realization of this utopic quest comes in the course of time, next to the need for the organization around an inspiring personality, which can infuse each troupe’s character with a sense of cohesion. In this transition, several factors were decisive significance: the institutionalization of state funding for “Free Theater,” the cultural policies that were implemented in the second period of the transition to democracy – whose cornerstone and main motto was cultural decentralization –, the suppost offered by the Muicipality of Thessaloniki to the new theater companies, the founding of the Department of Theater of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1992, the selection of Thessaloniki as the European Capital of Culture in 1997 and the great opportunity given to the audiences of the city to meet important world theater voices in this context. This excitement that contributed to the creation of this orgasmic ambience in the city’s theater scene during the Metapolitefsi only lasted for a few years, as in the 1990s only one of the four companies that are selected as case studies (namely the “Techni’s” Experimental Scene / Piramatiki Skini tis Tehnis) continued its noteworthy activity.
