A“bridgemaker”. That’s what Iakovos Pitzipios, son of Georgios from Chios, aspired to be in his life. He was a cosmopolitan of the 19th century. Until 1850 he went back and forth between the two coasts of the Aegean sea, between the newly established Kingdom of Greece and the Ottoman Empire, where he was born and its integrity he always supported, but he wanted it to be Byzantine, with a Christian Sultan and an active native element. A restless character by nature, he was never content with himself and would always seek something different. Although he studied Law in Paris, as he used to say, he never practiced it. He was a teacher in Odessa and in Ermoupolis’ Gymnasium and a Principal in the Phanar Greek Orthodox College. His difficult and distant character was the reason behind his constant relocations and quests. Through his publications he aspired to challenge Phanar and its circles. He was claiming the top spot in Greek romance with his Orphan from Chios, he provoked the public with his uncompleted Ape Xouth. Nevertheless he felt chocking in the limited borders of the Greek-speaking world. In this apparent dead end, the ad Orientales encyclical issued by Pope Pius ΙΧ was for him a way out. He decided to become his voice to the peoples of the East. He became an outcast, an apostate, he diverted from the circles of the Church of Anatolia and he faithfully served the papist propaganda through his offensive writings against the Church of Constantinople. He founded the Christian Society of Anatolia, as a successor to the Byzantine Society; he approached Napoleon III and the circles of the Russian intellect in Paris. He envisioned the union between the two Churches and he believed that the dogmatic differences between them have no significant importance against the benefits the union would bring to a nationalism- and wartorn Europe. But the developments in the Crimean War and the Treaty of Paris in 1856 brought him back to reality. Upset with his patrons he returned to the circles of the Church of Anatolia. With his writings he slammed the Romanists and all those who supported the quasi-reforms of the Hatti-Houmayoun. He dreamed of a prosperous Europe, he thought that the way of Civilization is open to all people irrespective of their ethnicity or religion and he was adamant that the path towards Peace, Order, Balance and Progress goes through the unity of all Christendom.
