The subject of this thesis is to study the long term changes of the solar spectral UV irradiance using measurements and model calculations. Although UV is only a small fraction of the solar radiation that reaches the earth surface, it is vital for life on earth. Through the evolution process, life on earth has slowly adapted to the current levels of UV radiation and its variations. The latter differ locally and arise from periodical phenomena such as the relative earth-sun position or from variations of surface and atmospheric factors such as surface reflectivity, cloudiness, ozone and aerosols. During the last decades, the levels of UV radiation over the globe have changed, mainly due the destruction of stratospheric ozone by ozone depleting substances (ODS), changes in surface reflectivity and total ozone column (TOC) driven by climate change, and changes in the emissions of anthropogenic air pollutants over large areas. The spatiotemporal variability of the changes is large and, in several cases, it is difficult to estimate whether UV irradiance increases or decreases with adequate statistical confidence. Important changes of UV irradiance are also projected for the future, mainly due to the reduction of the ODS in the stratosphere, climate change and the improvement of the air quality over the northern hemisphere. The present thesis had three main goals. The first was to reduce the uncertainties in the measurements of spectral UV irradiance through the improvement of the existing methods for the characterization of Brewer spectrophotometers. The Brewer operational characteristics were investigated in depth and several of the currently used characterization methods were evaluated. Finally, improved characterization methods for the effects of dead time and temperature on the instrument response were developed and used. Reduction of the uncertainties in the measurements leads to more accurate detection of trends and better understanding of the interactions between the UV irradiance and the main regulatory factors for its levels at the earth surface. The second goal was to study the short- and long-term variability of the solar, spectral UV and erythemal irradiance over Thessaloniki and attribute the changes to the changes in TOC, aerosols and cloudiness. The entire UV dataset from the two Brewer spectrophotometers operating at LAP was subjected to quality control and re-evaluation and then the short- and long-term changes of the UV irradiance were studied for the period 1994 – 2015. According to the results, the annual mean UV irradiance increased significantly over Thessaloniki during the period 1994 – 2006 and remains relatively stable thereafter. The long term changes of UV irradiance are mainly driven by changes in aerosols. However, the main drivers of the year to year variability of the UV-B and erythemal irradiance are TOC and clouds, while the year to year changes of UV irradiance at longer wavelengths are mainly driven by changes in cloudiness. The third and final goal of the present thesis was to investigate how climate change will affect the future levels of UV irradiance, and, specifically, to highlight the need for accurate UV measurements in order to continue the investigation of the UV trends. To achieve that we investigated how the land, ocean and atmospheric processes affected the levels of UV irradiance at the earth’s surface in the past and how they would affect them in the future according to two different IPCC socioeconomic scenarios, a moderate and an extreme one. The study was focused over the Arctic where changes of the UV irradiance in the recent past were important and are also expected to be important in the future. Simulations of the solar spectrum were performed for the past (1950s), the present and the future (2090s) using a radiative transfer model. Model inputs were outputs from global climate models participating in CMIP-5. Changes of surface reflectivity due to the severe sea-ice melting and the reduced snow cover, in conjunction with increased TOC and cloudiness would lead to large decreases of the monthly mean UV-B and UV-A irradiances relative to their present levels, which may exceed 40% locally, until the end of the 21st century. Thus, the already low levels of the erythemal irradiance and the effective dose for the production of vitamin D in the human skin would further decrease, affecting the health of more than two million people living inside the Arctic Circle.Summarizing, the present dissertation contributes in the improvement of the quality of spectral UV measurements, shows the important role of aerosols for the determination of the levels of UV irradiance over urban areas such as Thessaloniki and highlights the impact of climate change on the future levels of UV irradiance, especially due to the severe sea-ice melting over the higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere. Future work, based on the results of the present dissertation, may include further improvement of the characterization methods of measurements, more in depth study of the optical properties of aerosols in the UV region and their effects on the levels of the UV irradiance, and more accurate study of the complex interactions between UV radiation, ice, snow and clouds, especially over complex terrains.
