In the present doctoral work, it is shown that the Armenian Church included in her Synaxaria the lives of saints of the Orthodox Church (both Eastern and Western) who lived after the Synod of Chalcedon (451) and the ensuing great schism in the bosom of the one and undivided Church, when the Ancient Eastern Churches (Armenian, Syriac, and Coptic) were separated from the tradition of Constantinople and Rome, following their own liturgical and ecclesiastical life. Moreover, from the study of unedited manuscripts that has been accomplished in this doctoral work, it is demonstrated that the Armenian synaxarion writers, who were also clergymen, included not only post-Chalcedonian saints of the Eastern and Western Church in their Synaxaria but also enriched the texts with new and interesting commentary. In this work, a solution is sought regarding the way in which the martyrdoms and the martyrologies of these saints were included in the Armenian Synaxaria-that is to say, whether it occurred by chance or whether it was the result of systematic and longstanding activities of the Fathers of the Church. Finally, special research is presented on the relationships of the martyrdoms and martyrologies of the Armenian Synaxaria with the corresponding accounts of the Greek Synaxaria. The research follows the historical-philological method. Divided into four chapters, it is based on the study of unedited and published Greek and Armenian manuscripts and the related contemporary bibliography. The first chapter, entitled “The Sources: the Synaxaria,” presents an image of the Greek and Armenian Synaxaria, as well as the Armenian hagiography and martyrological literature from the era of the persecutions until the twelfth century, making reference to the redactions of the Armenian Synaxaria. The second chapter, entitled “The Post-Chalcedonian Saints in the Armenian Synaxaria,” presents all the indications about the Chalcedonian saints in the Armenian Church: in the Armenian Lectionary, the Armenian iconography, in the Armenian Ecclesiastical literature, and so on. Thereafter, charts are presented according to month with post-Chalcedonian saints who originate from the translation of the Synaxarion of Joseph of Constantinople. The third chapter, entitled “The Study of Hagiological Texts,” examines in detail the hagiological texts of the post-Chalcedonian saints, divided into two parts: a) First and second phases of the redaction of the hagiographical texts of the Armenian Synaxaria, and b) Brief and extended hagiographical texts. The fourth chapter, entitled “Philological Problems and the Contribution of the Armenian Synaxaria to Greek Hagiography,” investigates errors in translation. In addition, the present work, which includes new translations of the lives of saints who are common to both the pre-Chalcedonian and post-Chalcedonian Churches, contributes to the enrichment of the Heortologion of the Eastern and Western Christian Churches. Research on the post-Chalcedonian saints in the Armenian and Greek Hagiologies presents a broader scholarly interest, while the present doctoral research on primary sources is likely to spur a new form of comparative hagiographical study.
