Presentation and interpretation of theatrical performances of the dramatic festival of Syracuse in the first years of operation (1914-1939)
Abstract
This thesis is about the theatrological presentation and interpretation of the Greek Drama Productions in the first years of the Dramatic Festival of Syracuse. In the first section the historical, social and cultural context is presented where the Festival was created and developed at its first Nine Cycles (1914-1939). The second section includes four chapters each of them examines a different artistic sector and its creators: 1. Translation, 2. Music, 3. Dance, 4. Set scenery-costumes-posters. The third section examines the Mise en scene of every drama production, trying to present and interpret the work as a whole. A great part of this section includes detailed descriptions and analysis of all the productions. In the ‘Epilogue’ there is a question to be answered: How spectators and creators of the productions conceived the Greek drama in that period; then a completed view of the artistic event at Syracuse is given.
