Galen of Pergamum was a major medical practitioner and writer in the second century A.D. Galen left a great deal of work that comprises all areas of medical theory and practice. Thus, Galen had a serius engagement in philosophy, which formed his medical and scientific thought. Indeed, how far, how successfully and in precisely what ways various philosophical discourses are assimilated into his medical – scientific thought is a major question for Galenic studies. As indicated, Galen’s approach to philosophical traditions seems to be a mixed or eclectic one. There have been attempts to characterize Galen’ s position within a Platonic and Aristotelian framework of thoughts. “Middle Platonism” may mean that one adopts a broadly Platonic – Aristotelian synthesis, especially in moral psychology as against the common enemy of Stoicism. In this respect, this dissertation is about Galen’s reception of Aristotle’ s moral philosophy in all that survive of Galen’s work on psychological and ethical themes. The treatise focuses on three main themes. The first is Galen’s engagement in philosophy, his relation to his own contemporaries as well as figures from the past and the interaction with the broad literary – rhetorical culture known as the “Second Sophistic” of the Graeco – Roman world of his period. The second chapter approaches those Galenic texts that are relevant to psychology, the magnum opus, The Doctrines of Hippocrates and Plato and The Capacities of the Soul Depend on the Mixtures of the Body. Galen’ s main contribution to ethics are Phychological Affections coupled with an essay on intellectual or cognitive errors (The Diagnosis and Treatment of the Affections and Errors Peculiar to Each Person’ s Soul) and Avoiding Distress, an essay of how to deal with distress, the disasters and uncertainties of human life. In Galen’s late work My Own Books, these essays are listed among twenty – three works on ethical philosophy, most of which seem to fall into the type we would describe as practical ethics. Most of these Galenic writings have been lost. Apart from these essays, the only other work in this group which survives (in Arabic summary) is Character Traits. There are certain clear links between the surviving works as well as connections to The Doctrines of Hippocrates and Plato and The Capacities of the Soul Depend on the Mixtures of the Body. Even a superficial impression of Galen’s massive oeuvre cannot fail to convey a sense of the enormous, indeed paramount, formative influence of Aristotelian thinking on his works. There is a number of Aristotelian motifs throughout the works above and several characteristics of Aristotelian approach. It is striking that even in areas where Aristotle provided so much systematic support to Galen’ s positions, Galen nevertheless prefers to appeal to Hippocrates and Plato rather than Aristotle. Galen uses Aristotelian ideas, concepts and terminologies to form his own theory and advise his readers to moderate one’s emotions through a combination of natural talent, habituation and education. The acceptance of a moderate level of affection – known as metriopatheia – was the official doctrine of the Platonists of the period (sometimes referred to as “Middle Platonists”) and of Aristotelians. Galen seems to have embraced the best positions of Aristotle’ s moral philosophy. According to Galen health in body and mind, along with the wellbeing of friends and relatives, as well as an adequate supply of material goods, provides the foundation for the happy life, and that in turn can be maintained in harsher times through an appropriate education. But all this requires constant training, a daily exercise that is almost spititual, in order to achieve the required mastery over distress.
