This doctoral thesis presents a theoretical and experimental investigation of the interaction between microwaves and gases, focusing on gas ionization and plasma formation and their effects on the electrical and chemical properties of the gases. This study is considered an intermediate step toward the broader objective of developing multifunctional high-power microwave industrial devices. The study was organized into two areas of application:1.Ionization and plasma development in exhaust gas treatment systems aiming to modify the chemical composition of exhaust gases and reduce the harmful pollutants contained in them. The exposure of exhaust gases to microwave radiation results in the transfer of high kinetic energy into free electrons, which, by impinging on neutral unexcited atoms and molecules of the irradiated gases, can lead to the production of new free electrons, positive ions and the initiation of chemical processes that modify their chemical composition. The research focused on theoretical and experimental studies aimed at:a.optimizing the coupling of the microwave field to the exhaust gases to enhance energy transfer to free electrons, which induce molecular excitation, ionization, and dissociation through inelastic collisions, thereby initiating the desired chemical reactions for pollutant conversion;b.establishing and maintaining ionization and non-thermal plasma formation in high-flow exhaust streams; andc.assessing the feasibility of removing gaseous pollutants, including nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2), emitted by diesel engines.According to the above, a microwave resonant cavity was designed and fabricated with standard WR-340 waveguide elements to be used as an experimental Non-Thermal Plasma Reactor (NTPR). The cavity was constructed using straight waveguide sections of WR-340 waveguide together with an H-plane T-junction. The active microwave source is connected to the transverse arm of T-junction and the standing wave (SW) is formed in the longitudinal direction of the cavity. The microwave feed source was a Magnetron at 2.47 GHz with a maximum output power of 3 kW CW and 10 kW Pulsed (5 kW is possible by using Magic T).Initially, the microwave cavity was studied using circuit theory and transmission lines theory, while numerical calculations were performed using MATLAB. Next, a full-wave electromagnetic analysis of the microwave cavity was performed using CST Studio Suite software. According to the results of the theoretical study, two microwave cavities were constructed for pulsed and CW operation. The reason for the two different cavities lies in the fact that in pulsed source mode, the operating frequency is 2.47 GHz while in CW mode it is 2.46 GHz. Due to the high-Q resonant cavity, one cavity cannot cover this difference in active source operating frequency. The experiments made it easily apparent that CW operation of the source, depending on the level of output power, either does not affect the exhaust gas pollutants from diesel engines at all (low power levels), or significantly increases their temperature and NOx concentration (high power levels). After that, experiments were carried out with pulsed operation and output power of 10 kW, which showed results similar to those of High-Power CW experiments. This led us to reduce the output power of the source to 5 kW, using a Magic Tee. At this output power, experiments were performed with a fixed duty cycle and with a variable duty cycle. In the fixed duty cycle experiments, it was shown that there are some optimal combinations of pulse duration and PRF that favour the reduction of nitrogen oxides. However, only a limited reduction in NOx concentration was achieved. In the experiments with a variable duty cycle, two approaches regarding the microwave manipulation were carried out. The first approach involved operating the source at high PRF to induce an increase in nitric oxide, followed by a gradual reduction of the PRF (retreat phase). This tactic demonstrated a temporary reduction but relatively quickly the NOx returned to the original values without microwaves. The second approach was based on an "ignite–retreat" scheme. Specifically, by applying a high PRF for a very short time we caused an increase in NOx and then with a lower PRF we were able to reduce NOx well below their initial values. As soon as the nitrogen oxides showed a tendency to increase, we repeated the "ignite–retreat". This operating pattern was consistent and repeatable. Under the "ignite–retreat" operating scheme, a 12–15% reduction in NO concentration was recorded. Although the reduction was modest, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this study reports the first systematic reduction in NOx concentration in diesel exhaust gas containing 16–18% oxygen achieved exclusively through microwave excitation, without supplementary treatment using an electron beam, plasma jet, or chemical reagents. The thesis also investigates the use of gas discharge tubes (GDTs) as switching elements in high-power microwave devices, including microwave pulse compressors (MPCs). Upon gas breakdown, plasma formation within the GDT increases the electrical conductivity of the gas, thereby altering the effective electrical dimensions of the resonant microwave cavity and initiating the discharge phase. As a result, the stored electromagnetic (EM) energy is released as a short-duration, high-power microwave pulse. The proposed research emphasizes the theoretical and experimental investigation of the ionization process and plasma formation within the GDT in order to understand the interaction between the EM field and the ionized particles and to derive design guidelines for the optimal fabrication and operation of GDTs. The ultimate objective is the development of an optimized, repetitively operated GDT plasma switch with high switching speed, low switching losses, and reliable operation under high pulse repetition rates.A microwave pulse compressor was designed and fabricated using standard WR-340 waveguide components. The cavity was constructed using straight waveguide sections of WR-340 waveguide together with an H-plane T-junction. In the transverse arm of T-junction and at a distance of λg/4 from the short circuit (SC) a GDT with outer diameter 12 mm was positioned. The GDT was filled with dry air at 3 Torr. Experiments were conducted using a Magnetron operating at 2.47 GHz with a peak output power of 10 kW.In particular, a methodology is presented to derive a time-dependent conductivity model for GDT by comparing simulated data with compressed pulse data from experiments. The derived GDT model was subsequently applied to representative MPC geometries to investigate their effect on the compressed-pulse waveform and to demonstrate that the optimal steady-state design does not necessarily yield the highest peak amplitude under transient conditions. Simulation results with CST Studio Suite have shown that a relatively accurate representation of the compressed pulse shape of an active MPC can be obtained by assuming a step function profile for the effective conductivity of the GDT upon activation, especially when the rise time of the conductivity to its maximum value is taken into account. An even more accurate representation of the compressed pulse can be obtained by carefully fitting the time profile of the effective conductivity of the GDT, based on the experimentally recorded pulses associated with the MPC of interest. In addition, this methodology was used to design and develop an experimental setup and process the results in order to experimentally estimate the time-dependent reflection coefficient of the GDT, taking into account various design parameters such as gas type, flow rate, pressure level and GDT diameter. For such an application, accurate GDT simulation with a known conductivity profile is crucial to verify the validity of the results processing method. Such validation cannot be performed directly during the experiment because the actual time-dependent reflection coefficient of the GDT is not independently known.Subsequently, a microwave pulse compressor was designed and implemented at 1.3 GHz with standard WR-650 waveguide components, targeting to develop the necessary background for optimization of both external triggering and self-breakdown GDT operation modes. The investigation explores how design and operational factors influence the GDT timing and reflectivity properties. The parameters considered include:•diameter of Gas Discharge Tube (DGDT, mm)•gas type (dry air or nitrogen)•gas flow rate (high or low flow, sccm)•gas pressure (Torr)•pulse width (PW, μs)•pulse repetition frequency (PRF, Hz)The research methodology adopts a stepwise approach. The timing characteristics were investigated first, followed by the reflectivity characteristics under operating conditions associated with timely GDT discharge. The study focuses on tube outer diameters from 8 to 14 mm, recognizing that these design variations may critically affect the breakdown characteristics. Operational variables significantly impact GDT functionality. Gas type selection determines the baseline for breakdown voltage and recovery time, while gas flow and pressure levels create different ionization environments. These interconnected parameters are analyzed to identify optimal configurations across operating modes. This evaluation reveals how component-level design choices affect the overall system performance, providing insights for improved microwave pulse compression applications.
