Based on the statistical analysis of the empirical data, the study concludes that Greek and Bulgarian older adults differ in their overall attitudes toward life, with Greek older adults demonstrating a more positive profile. Specifically, Greek participants reported lower psychological distress, higher dispositional optimism, and a stronger sense of purpose in life than their Bulgarian counterparts. However, the two groups did not differ significantly in their overall levels of psychological well-being or life satisfaction. The findings indicate that culture plays an important role in shaping the psychological characteristics associated with attitudes toward life in old age, but its influence is not uniform across all dimensions. Rather, cultural differences interact with demographic and social factors such as gender, age, education, living conditions, and place of residence.Cross-cultural differencesOne of the most important findings was the significantly higher level of psychological ...
Rather, cultural differences interact with demographic and social factors such as gender, age, education, living conditions, and place of residence.Cross-cultural differencesOne of the most important findings was the significantly higher level of psychological distress among Bulgarian older adults compared with Greek older adults. Nevertheless, the effect of culture was influenced by living conditions and place of residence. In particular, Greek older adults who lived alone in rural areas demonstrated the highest levels of psychological distress, whereas Greek older adults living in rural areas with relatives demonstrated the lowest levels. Greek older adults also demonstrated significantly higher dispositional optimism and purpose in life than Bulgarian older adults. In contrast, no significant overall cultural differences were found in psychological well-being and life satisfaction. These findings suggest that the concept of a more positive attitude toward life among Greek older adults is primarily reflected in lower distress, greater optimism, and a stronger sense of purpose rather than in uniformly higher levels of well-being or life satisfaction. Psychological well-beingThe results demonstrate that psychological well-being is influenced by the interaction of culture with gender, education, and living conditions. The highest levels of psychological well-being were observed among Bulgarian older women living with relatives and among Bulgarian older adults with higher education who lived with relatives. Conversely, the lowest levels were found among Greek older women living alone and among Greek older adults without higher education who lived alone.Within the Greek sample, education did not have a significant direct effect on psychological well-being, while in the Bulgarian sample, higher education was associated with higher psychological well-being. Thus, the role of education in relation to well-being appears to be culturally dependent.Dispositional optimismDispositional optimism was another important dimension on which the two cultural groups differed. Greek older adults demonstrated significantly higher optimism than Bulgarian older adults. Within the Greek sample, higher education was associated with higher optimism, while living alone was associated with lower optimism. The interaction analyses showed that Greek older women living with relatives, particularly those with primary education, exhibited particularly high levels of optimism. In contrast, particularly low levels of optimism were observed among Bulgarian older men living alone, especially those with secondary or higher education, as well as among highly educated Greek older women living alone. These findings emphasize the importance of social relationships and living arrangements in maintaining a positive orientation toward life in later adulthood. Purpose in life The study also identified significant cultural differences in purpose in life, with Greek older adults reporting higher levels than Bulgarian older adults. The highest levels were observed among Greek older men with higher education and among Greek older men living with a partner. Conversely, Bulgarian older men with secondary education and Greek older men living alone demonstrated particularly low levels of purpose in life. Age also affected purpose in life differently in the two cultures. Among Bulgarian older adults, those in the early stage of old age reported higher purpose in life than those in the later stage. In contrast, age did not significantly influence purpose in life among Greek older adults. Life satisfaction Despite the absence of a significant overall difference between Greek and Bulgarian older adults in life satisfaction, several important interaction effects were identified. Among Greek participants, higher life satisfaction was associated with higher education and supportive living arrangements. Particularly high levels were found among highly educated Greek older adults living with a partner and relatives, as well as among Greek older women with higher education and those living with a partner and relatives. Lower levels of life satisfaction were observed among Greek older women living alone, highly educated Greek older adults living alone, and Greek older adults with primary education living in urban areas. Among Bulgarian participants, lower life satisfaction was particularly evident among older adults with primary education living in urban areas and among Bulgarian older men with secondary education. These results demonstrate that life satisfaction cannot be adequately understood through a single demographic factor, since it is shaped by the interaction of cultural, educational, gender-related, residential, and family circumstances. Gender differences Gender produced a remarkably consistent pattern in both cultural groups. In both Greece and Bulgaria, older women reported significantly higher psychological distress than older men. However, gender did not produce significant differences in psychological well-being, purpose in life, dispositional optimism, or life satisfaction when considered independently. Thus, the findings suggest that gender may be a relatively culture-independent factor in relation to psychological distress, while its influence on other dimensions of attitudes toward life is more dependent on interactions with other demographic and social variables.Age differencesAge produced different effects in the two countries. Among Greek older adults, those in the early stage of old age reported higher psychological distress than those in later old age. Age did not significantly affect psychological well-being, purpose in life, optimism, or life satisfaction. In Bulgaria, however, early older adults demonstrated higher optimism and a stronger purpose in life than late older adults. Age did not significantly affect psychological well-being, psychological distress, or life satisfaction. These findings provide evidence that the psychological meaning of age in later adulthood may differ according to cultural context. Education Education was also found to have culturally specific effects. Among Greek older adults, higher education was associated with greater dispositional optimism and higher life satisfaction. Greek participants with primary education generally demonstrated the lowest levels of these characteristics. In the Bulgarian sample, education primarily influenced psychological well-being, with older adults having higher education reporting the highest levels of well-being. Education did not significantly affect psychological distress, purpose in life, optimism, or life satisfaction among Bulgarian participants. Therefore, education appears to be a stronger determinant of attitudes toward life in the Greek sample in relation to optimism and life satisfaction, whereas in Bulgaria its most evident effect concerns psychological well-being. Living conditionsLiving arrangements emerged as one of the most important factors, particularly among Bulgarian older adults. In Greece, living alone was associated with lower dispositional optimism and lower life satisfaction, although living conditions did not significantly affect psychological distress, psychological well-being, or purpose in life when considered independently. In Bulgaria, living conditions had a much broader effect. They significantly influenced psychological distress, psychological well-being, optimism, and life satisfaction. Bulgarian older adults living alone exhibited the highest psychological distress and the lowest levels of psychological well-being, optimism, and life satisfaction compared with those living with a partner, relatives, or both. Consequently, living alone appears to represent a particularly important social vulnerability factor among older adults, although its psychological impact varies between cultures. Place of residence In contrast to the other demographic variables, place of residence did not have a significant direct effect on the studied psychological variables in either the Greek or Bulgarian samples. Nevertheless, the interaction analyses showed that place of residence can become important when combined with other factors, such as culture, education, and living conditions. Thus, rural or urban residence alone does not appear to determine the psychological characteristics of older adults. Its influence is better understood within the broader social and cultural context. Relationships between the psychological variables The correlation analyses further clarified the relationships among the studied dimensions. In both cultural groups, psychological distress was negatively associated with psychological well-being. This relationship was moderate in strength among Greek older adults and weak among Bulgarian older adults, indicating that higher distress was generally accompanied by lower well-being. A moderate positive relationship between purpose in life and life satisfaction was identified in both samples. This suggests that older adults who experience a stronger sense of meaning and purpose are also more likely to feel satisfied with their lives, regardless of cultural background. A weak positive relationship between dispositional optimism and life satisfaction was identified only among Greek older adults. This association was not statistically significant in the Bulgarian sample. Overall interpretation Taken together, the findings support the general hypothesis that Greek older adults display a more positive attitude toward life than Bulgarian older adults. This conclusion is based primarily on their lower psychological distress and higher levels of dispositional optimism and purpose in life. Nevertheless, the absence of significant cultural differences in psychological well-being and life satisfaction indicates that the two groups also share important similarities. The study further demonstrates that the effects of demographic factors are culturally dependent. Gender showed a relatively similar pattern in both countries, particularly with regard to psychological distress, while place of residence had no significant direct effects in either sample. In contrast, age, education, and living conditions demonstrated different patterns of influence across the two cultures. Age appeared to have a broader influence on the Bulgarian sample, affecting optimism and purpose in life, whereas in Greece its primary effect concerned psychological distress. Education had a stronger influence on optimism and life satisfaction among Greek older adults, while in Bulgaria its principal influence concerned psychological well-being. Living conditions also had a broader psychological impact in Bulgaria than in Greece, affecting several dimensions of the attitude toward life. Main contribution of the study A major contribution of the research is that, to the authors' knowledge, it constitutes a comparative investigation of the attitudes toward life of Greek and Bulgarian older adults, examining psychological well-being, psychological distress, purpose in life, dispositional optimism, and life satisfaction within the same research framework. The study contributes to the literature on ageing by demonstrating that culture can influence not only the levels of psychological characteristics in older adulthood but also the way demographic and social factors affect these characteristics. Consequently, factors such as gender, age, education, and living conditions cannot always be interpreted independently of cultural context. The research provides new empirical evidence that Greek older adults have lower psychological distress and higher optimism and purpose in life than Bulgarian older adults, while the two groups have comparable levels of psychological well-being and life satisfaction. It also demonstrates that women in both cultures experience greater psychological distress than men, whereas place of residence does not independently determine the psychological outcomes examined. Another important contribution concerns the culture-related differences in the effects of age, education, and living conditions. Age influences psychological distress among Greek older adults but optimism and purpose in life among Bulgarian older adults. Education is associated primarily with optimism and life satisfaction in Greece, whereas in Bulgaria it is associated mainly with psychological well-being. Living alone is associated with lower optimism and life satisfaction among Greek older adults, while among Bulgarian older adults it is associated with a broader pattern of psychological vulnerability, including greater distress and lower well-being, optimism, and life satisfaction. Conclusion Overall, the findings demonstrate that the attitude of older adults toward life is a multidimensional phenomenon determined by the interaction of cultural, psychological, demographic, and social factors. Greek older adults generally display a more positive psychological profile than Bulgarian older adults, particularly in terms of psychological distress, optimism, and purpose in life. At the same time, the comparable levels of psychological well-being and life satisfaction indicate that cultural differences do not affect all aspects of ageing in the same way. The particularly negative outcomes associated with living alone, especially among Bulgarian older adults, highlight the importance of social support, family relationships, and appropriate living conditions for psychological adaptation in later life. The findings also underline the importance of education and meaningful social relationships as potential protective factors. The study therefore reinforces the need for ageing policies and psychological and social interventions to take cultural context and individual circumstances into account. Programs aimed at improving the quality of life of older adults should not focus exclusively on psychological symptoms but should also promote social connectedness, meaningful engagement, optimism, purpose in life, and supportive living environments. In this respect, the research provides useful evidence for the development of culturally sensitive social and healthcare interventions designed to promote mental health and a more positive attitude toward life among older adults in Greece, Bulgaria, and potentially other cultural contexts.
