Modeling and coordination of surge protective devices: application to electric vehicle charging stations
Abstract
Within the framework of this doctoral dissertation, the modeling and coordination of surge protective devices are investigated. A generalized and experimentally validated methodology was developed for the electrical characterization and modeling of surge protective devices of different technologies, based on experimental data acquired under applied voltages and currents over a wide range of frequency and energy content. Within this methodology, an equivalent lumped-parameter circuit model is proposed, suitable for electromagnetic transient simulations in ATP-EMTP. The proposed model accounts for the sparkover, resistive, inductive, and capacitive behavior of surge protective devices and is validated through comparison with experimental data. The simulation results show satisfactory agreement with the measurements, demonstrating the suitability of the proposed approach for insulation coordination and surge protection studies. In addition, the coordination of surge protective devices in ...
