The Old Catholic movement at its birth in 1871 sought theological dialogue with Orthodoxy in the 19th century, in a period from 1871 to the beginning of the 20th century. The first phase concerns the conferences of Munich (1871), Cologne (1872), Konstanz (1873), Freiburg (1874) and Bonn (1874-1875), while the second concerns the correspondence of the committees in Rotterdam and St Petersburg (1893-1913), including the international Old-Catholic conferences of Lucerne (1892), Rotterdam (1894) and Vienna (1897), as well as the founding declaration of Utrecht (1889). Equally important was the informal dialogue conducted through the publications of Western and Eastern theologians in the Revue internationale de theologie from 1892 until 1911, when it was renamed the Internationale Kirchliche Zeitschrift. Equally important was the informal dialogue conducted through the publications of Western and Eastern theologians in the Revue internationale de theologie from 1892 until 1911, when it was renamed the Internationale Kirchliche Zeitschrift. The condemnation of the Filioque as an illegal and noncanonical addition to the symbol of faith, along with the doctrines of the Immaculate Conception, papal infallibility, opera supererogationis and purgatory, at the reunion conferences in Bonn, but also at subsequent meetings with the Orthodox, testifies to a positive reforming mood of the Old Catholics. However, their reluctance to acknowledge the Seventh Ecumenical Council distanced them from the Orthodox Church. Personalities of the bilateral theological dialogue from the Old Catholic Church were Joseph Hubert Reinkens (1821-1896), Franz Heinrich Reusch (1825-1900), Johann Friedrich von Schulte (1827-1912) and Ignaz von Döllinger (1799-1890) and from the Orthodox Church, Alexandros Lykourgos (1827-1875), Zikos Rossis (1838-1933), Nikolaos Damalas (1842-1892), Alexander Kireeff (1838-1910) and Joseph Julian Overbeck (1821-1905). The latter advocated Western Orthodoxy, a form of reverse uniatism on the part of the Orthodox, a unifying scheme that involved both the both the Old-Catholics and the rest of the non-Orthodox Christians. The study of Orthodox-Old Catholic relations in their beginnings justified the course of the bilateral dialogue during the 20th century, mainly regarding the renegotiation of doctrinal positions, such as the Filioque, in a dialectic that is part of the wider context of the coexistence of Western and Eastern European cultures.
