Flat dentine surfaces of non-carious human teeth were used. A tubular stainless steel holder was filled with the material under test and centered on to the exposed dentine area. The holder was the loaded with a brass weight and the assembly was allowed to set for 15 minutes at room temperature. The bonded assembly was the removed from the alignment jig and stored in water 37o C in a humidifier for 24 hours until testing. The test was performed using an Instron testing machine. The tensile load required to cause fracture was recorded using a crosshead speed of 0.5 cm per minute. After the fracture of the bond the surfaces of dentine and the bonded material were prepared for Scanning electron microscopy. Results 1) Both glass ionomer cements showed good bonding with the untreated dentine. ASPA bonding improved by citric acid pre- treatment while the bonding of the Fuji was improved after pre-treatment of the dentine surface with EDTA solution. 2) The use of the remineralizing solution didn’t affect the bonding of the glass ionomer cement to dentine. 3) The best bonding with untreated dentine was obtained by the polycarboxylate cement, with further improvement by the use of the remineralizing solution. On the other hand the bonding of the polycarboxylate cement was reduced after treatment of the dentine surface with citric acid solution. 4)Although Cervident showed no or very low bonding with dentine untreated or treated with phosphoric acid, the use of the promoter increased dramatically the bonding of the material.By the SEM examination all the materials showed penetration into the open tubules after the use of the acid etchants. Bonding of the polycarboxylate cement with dentine is a result of adhesive forces, on the contrary glass ionomer cements and composite resins after the use of the promoter, achieve adhesion in addition to michromechanical interlocking by tubular penetration.
