Optimisation of physical and mechanical properties of electric arc furnace slag for uses as aggregate in cement concrete applications

Abstract

The thesis deals with the modification of the production process incorporated in electric arc furnaces in steel industry. The modifications are targeting towards valorisation of the largest-in-volume by-product, electric arc furnace slag. The objective of the research is the modification of physical properties of slag by initiating soluble solids as well as intervention in the cooling process. The objectives also include study of physical properties of the modified slag, implementation of the new by-product in cement concrete as well as the economic feasibility of the project. The research is specifically aiming at the reduction of the specific weight of slag. The most important finding is the reduction of specific weight by 7,5% compared to unmodified slag, with the addition of 10% perlite. The decrease in specific weight is achieved in two modification procedures.
