This thesis records man’s advance on earth from his creation through to his death, through a review of the hymns, prayers, kontakions and readings of the Requiem, or funeral Mass. The Church accompanies its members with this Mass during their exit from earthly life and it is characterised as a “mystery on sacred sleep”. Its content refers to God’s “ex nihilo” creation of world and man, His placement of him in Paradise, Devil’s fraudulent actions, man’s disobedience and fall, his exit from Paradise and to the loving and humane attempts by the Lord for man’s restoration to his pre-fall condition. Throughout the Mass the world’s vanity is stressed, as well as the brevity and temporality of life and there are references to Hell and Paradise along with a clear faith in the resurrection of the dead.Man’s nature, created by God, is blessed with the capacity of being “in the image and likeness” of his Creator. The purpose and aim of the human’s creation is the achievement of grace and holiness, in other words godliness. Man, through good use of the spiritual gifts and powers afforded him by God, is called upon by the natural and moral purity within the “image and likeness” to reach perfection of grace and holiness. God provided everything needed for His creation to be in constant communion with Him. When man, seduced by Devil’s fraudulent actions, disobeyed His commandments and besmirched his “in the image” so that he also lost the “likeness”, then the compassionate God, showing His highest love, send His Son to save him. The Lord’s incarnation and Resurrection brought the end of death. For Christians, who through Baptism are deemed to be co-interned with Jesus, death is not the end of man’s existence, it is a “sleep”, temporary, lasting only until the Second Coming. The anthropological message of the Requiem Mass, from the first moment and in all its forms through the ages, is always the same. That death is no longer. It has been completely cancelled. It was taken care of by Him, whose love for his creation does not permit allowing its extermination. Death was cancelled by His death, and thereafter all in the body of His Church will one day become citizens of His Heavenly Kingdom. Constant grieving and mourning are not appropriate and will achieve no change in the state neither of the dead, nor their relatives. Only the thought that man is at last near. God is true verity, and it offers consolation to those close to the person. The Church’s nature and direction is eschatological. In its totality it aims to lead man through life and death to resurrection and eternity, to the eighth day, the inexhaustible day of the Kingdom, the life of the age to come, from the present now to the future. Man is betrothed here, for the marriage ceremony to take place there.
