The current work proposes for the first time a generic methodology for the systematic selection of working mixtures by targeting specific mixture and process related properties, and assessing process performance criteria under steady-state and dynamic conditions. The current work proposes for the first time a generic methodology for the systematic selection of working mixtures by targeting specific mixture and process related properties, and assessing process performance criteria under steady-state and dynamic conditions. It focuses on two specific applications; namely solvent based CO2 capture and organic Rankine cycles. More specifically, solvent-based CO2 capture is a complex process that involves the chemical separation of CO2 from flue gases using a solvent mixture. The selection of a mixture which enables efficient CO2 capture is challenging due to the large number of mixture candidates and the non-ideal thermodynamic solvent-CO2 behaviour. Such challenges are addressed through a multicriteria selection methodology for the preliminary screening of binary amine mixtures as CO2 capture candidates. The simultaneous consideration of several important mixture properties as selection criteria unveils important mixture performance trade-offs. Uncertainty is further considered for the first time in the predictions made by the available models in the selection of CO2 capture solvent mixtures. While the selection of CO2 solvent mixtures using property criteria is computationally efficient, the use of process-related criteria enables a more reliable selection based on economic process performance of solvents. The non-ideal behavior of solvent-water- CO2 mixtures makes the development of the necessary reactive separation process models difficult, while their use is not without significant computational challenges. To attain process-based evaluation without numerical difficulties it is possible to use models of lower fidelity, such as shortcut models, but still of adequate accuracy, as a means of fast, process-based solvent screening. To this end, this work employs a shortcut model which accounts for non-ideal thermodynamics. It is applied for the first time in the selection of conventional solvent mixtures as well as of a new class of solvents, namely phase-change solvents. The latter support the appearance of a second liquid phase after absorption, which may be separated mechanically, instead of thermally. These solvents achieve significant energetic and economic reductions, compared to conventional options. The proposed shortcut model captures directly the non-ideal solvent-water-CO2 interactions hence it is also used to evaluate solvent performance in the presence of disturbances. Solvents which exhibit high economic performance at steady-state operation may be very sensitive at off-design conditions, with detrimental effects on process economics. The assessment of solvent mixtures at off-design conditions is approached through a systematic non-linear sensitivity analysis method which investigates the static operability performance of each solvent in the process for both conventional and phase change solvents. It is based on the development of a sensitivity matrix which incorporates the derivatives of multiple process performance measures with respect to multiple operating parameters and solvents. After solvent mixture selection, the proposed developments are extended to mixtures for organic Rankine cycles. In this case, the work focuses on the dynamic cycle performance. A systematic method is proposed for optimal design and control of ORC. The method includes the working mixture selection as well as the determination of operating conditions in order to achieve the optimal performance of the aforementioned conversion energy system. The proposed work studies the impact of design decision parameters on the dynamic ORC behavior and optimal control since these impose restrictions on the control system performance. To this end, the impact of different working fluids on the ORC control system performance in an ORC is investigated for the first time. Mixture selection is further extended and investigated for the first time within an integrated framework of ORC design and control. Novel and conventional hydrocarbon- and halogenated hydrocarbon-based mixtures are considered for the integrated ORC process and control system design under the proposed unified framework. The simultaneous problem of working mixture selection and process design under static and closed loop conditions is solved using a stochastic optimization technique
