This doctoral dissertation raises the issue of linguistic variation and its representation in French foreign language textbooks. In this study, we demonstrate that variation in French, as it is represented in textbooks, provides a powerful means for (re)producing the standard language among all the other varieties of French included therein. Further, we argue that the process of (re)production of standard French entails the representation of linguistic variation in textbooks, by linking it to the hierarchical sociolinguistic differentiation of French speakers portrayed in them. As it is clearly shown in our study, the ranking of sociolinguistic differences between French speakers depicted in textbooks is governed by a language ideology, a set of perceptions rationalizing the link between language varieties and speakers’ social categories. In such a way, standard French is (re)produced in (and by) textbooks as a hierarchically superior language variety against all the other language var ...
In such a way, standard French is (re)produced in (and by) textbooks as a hierarchically superior language variety against all the other language varieties and French speakers represented in them. At the same time, foreign language learners, using these textbooks, end by thinking that the prominence of the Standard is the main sociolinguistic fact to be accepted and approved by them through their common use of French. In methodological terms, our dissertation relies on a qualitative analysis of French foreign language textbooks. Our analytical framework is discourse-oriented, so that French varieties from different levels of analysis (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon, pragmatics) are studied in textbooks in their context of use, as part and parcel of texts, including language along with other semiotic codes and devices (e.g. pictures of speakers, typographic conventions, graphic frames and designs, etc.). In our dissertation, style, as it was used and defined by Eckert (2009, 2012), is our main analytical category for the study of sociolinguistic differences between French speakers, as they are portrayed in French foreign language textbooks. Moreover, we draw our analytical tools on a semiotic approach of style and language varieties derived from anthropological linguistics (Agha, 2007), which is further complemented by three semiotic processes, elaborated by Irvine and Gal (2000), in order to trace and discuss the ideology of linguistic differentiation. In overall terms, our dissertation aims at revealing the central role of language ideology, which underlies not only the authors’ choices in textbooks (on the micro-level of analysis), but also the whole language politics for the promotion of standard French as the main language variety for international teaching and use (on the macro-level of analysis). In the concluding remarks of our dissertation, we focus our discussion on the impact of our doctoral research on the general study of language standardization (i.e. the (re)production of standard languages), by highlighting the sociolinguistic inequalities such an institutional process brings with it, and especially in relation with foreign language learning and teaching, where courses informed by sociolinguistics should be seen as a priority.
