Sustainable range management for common use by livestock and wildlife can be achieved only if there is adequate knowledge about the possible interactions between animal species. The purpose of this research was to investigate if the coexistence of livestock (goats and sheep) and brown hare is feasible in a typical Mediterranean rangeland, by studying their feeding behavior as well as the effects of livestock grazing intensity on hare habitat use. For this purpose, the methods of microhistological analysis of faeces and pellet counts were used. Shrub species and mainly kermes oak constituted the major percentage in goats’ diet, in all seasons. Shrub percentages were increased the seasons when herbage availability and quality were low (winter and summer). In spring and in autumn, the consumption of shrubs was low and the percentage of herbage was increased. Shrub consumption by sheep was generally high but lower than that of goats. Among shrub species, kermes oak was the principal food source for livestock in all seasons. In spring and also in summer and autumn, when the availability of herbage was increased, livestock consumed higher quantities of shrubs. This means, that forbs, legumes and grasses were more preferred food of sheep than shrubs did. Grasses were the main food source of brown hare in all seasons, since they made up more than half of their total diet. The dominant species in hare diet was Chrysopogon gryllus in all seasons. The main shrub species which were consumed by hare was Spartium jungeum. Legumes were a minor constituent in hare diet. Among the forbs, Dianthus pinnifolius, Silene nutans, Clypeola jonthlaspi and Cichorium intybus had generally high percentages in hare diet, according to their availability in each season. Preference indices of kermes oak for goats were not above the preference threshold in all seasons. The great availability of kermes oak and the light and moderate livestock grazing intensities are considered the main reasons for the low preference indices of kermes oak. In spring, the majority of grass species were preferred for goats. Among them, only Cynodon dactylon and Dactylis glomerata were preferred by goats in all seasons. Valuable food source were also medicks and trefoils in all seasons and especially in spring and autumn. Among forbs, Sanguisorba minor, Malva sylvestris, Cichorium intybus and Calendula officinallis, were preferred by goats, in seasons when their availability was increased. Herbs (grasses, legumes and forbs) preferred by sheep in all seasons and especially in spring and in autumn. On the contrary, the preference indices of shrub species were generally low. Conclusively, livestock preferred to feed in each season upon plant species, in relation to forage availability and quality. Spartium jungeum was the most preferred plant species by hare in relation to all the other plant species (shrubs and herbs) in the study area in all seasons. Other shrub species which were preferred by the hare were the Anthyllis hermanniae in all seasons and the Asparagus acutifolius in spring, when young and palatable sprouts are emerging. Grasses, even though their percentage in hare diet was generally high, were not preferred by hare due to their high availability. Hare, as well as livestock, preferred to feed with plant species which were available in each season and its feeding behavior was influenced by the phaenology of plant species.
