In this thesis we developed the topic “Saint Niciphorous Patriarch of Constantinople the confessor. Life and work". We worked on one of the most emblematic forms of iconoclasm who was born, brought up and appeared in the public life of the empire during its first period but acted and sealed his action during its second period. He was the son ofasekretisTheodoros who was imprisoned, tortured and exiled for his beliefs, and of Evdokia who undertook his education after the death of her husband. The young Niciphorous was chosen to be hired by the imperial secretariat and appeared as an asekretis at the second session of the Seventh Ecumenical Council to read the letter of Pope Adrian in Greek to Emperor Constantine VI and his mother Empress Irini as well as other documents such as the Term of the Synod. He then retired to the Monastery of Agathos and then took over the management of the poorhouse at the urging of the inmates. After the death of Patriarch Tarasios on February 25th, 806, the new Greek emperor Niciphorous turned to the asekritis Niciphorous and presented him as worthy because he wanted the new patriarch to come neither from the clergy nor from the ranks of the monks, in other words, to be unscathed by the problems of the past. Thus, on April 5th, under the patronage of the successor Stavrakios, he became a monk, on the 9th, a deacon and finally on April 12th, on Easter Monday, a Patriarch. This athroneous promotion brought the reaction of the Studite monks which continued during the reign of his successor of Michael I of Ragave.During the same years, Patriarch Niciphorous faced many pastoral problems of the Church. First of all, he was forced to control many abuses in the monastic life due to the existence and operation of many "double monasteries" or "twins" that had a common spiritual leadership and property (although the Seventh Ecumenical Council of 787 with its 20th canon condemned it and allowed the local bishop to dissolve them).Theofanis in his Chronicle preserves the following: In the year 813, Syria and Palestine and their monasteries there were destroyed by the Arabs and all fled to the Byzantine provinces and Cyprus. Then Emperor Michael I and Patriarch Niciphorous worked together to deal with the problem and granted the refugees and the monks who fled to Cyprus a talent of gold while the monks who fled to the capital were granted a monastery. In the same period on May 4th, the patriarch ordained Nikitasas Abbot of the Monastery ofMidiki, in succession to its founder, Abbot Niciphorous. By admonitions he tried to prevent "the lord of the Taurian estates" from divorcing his wife, and forbade the nobles to send away their wives. In addition, he consolidated with his work the normal order of the Church as the only source of harmony and grace in church life. The biggest problems in the patriarchate of Niciphorous arose when Leon V the Armenian took over as emperor, who with his own committee using the (heretical) teaching of the Mount of the Synod of the Priesthood, made a memorandum and presented it to the patriarch at Christmas 814.Reacting, Patriarch Niciphorous convened theEndimousa (from 270 bishops, etc.) Synod of the Patriarchate. After studying these positions, the synod found them to be heretical, condemned them as malicious, and declared adherence to what was decide on the Seventh Ecumenical Synod. This attitude brought about the polarization between the goverment and the Church, with result that the emperor managed through silence the resignation of the patriarch first and then his exile on March 815.After the assassination of Emperor Leon V, Michael II the Traulos ascended the throne, who recalled the Patriarch from exile, but did not restore him to his Throne because he had an obligation to Theodotos Melissinos, the (iconoclastic) patriarch, who had elevated Leon V on the throne. The patriarch therefore did not move away from the place of his exile, the Monastery of AgiosTheodoros on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. There he remained writing against the iconoclasts until the end of his life, on Easter, April 5th, 828/9.His rich work consists of Historical, Theological, Sociological [the canons with his name only in their original core bear his seal] works as well as Epistles and various others. With his theological work, Patriarch Niciphorous systematically fought the heretical teaching of the Synod of the Hieria in 754.He then updated the theological teaching of the 7th Ecumenical Synod on the Holy Icons. The patriarch with his work declared that the worship of the holy icons does not constitute an inclination to idolatry. In the orthodox icon, the visible is described, the incarnate Son and Word of God, Jesus Christ and not God the Father.Patriarch Niciphorous in his writing followed the apologetic line of John of Damascus and applied Aristotelian logic as used by the fathers of the first period. Thus he formulated the orthodox view that the attributed veneration of images is offered because they exist as "imprints of the original beings and nothing else" and that in the image of the Word of God, which is described in terms of humanity while remaining inscribed in terms of divinity. The life of Patriarch Niciphorous after the life of Patriarch Tarasios constitutes a complete encyclopedia of the Iconoclasm.Moderation, economy guided his actions at all levels of his ministry, thus setting an example of a church leader. The involvement of the patriarch Niciphorous in the restoration of the Abbot Joseph of the Cathars, the "adulterer", was not a personal choice but a forced alignment with the imperial policy.Although he was consensual as a hierarch, he could not tame imperial choices and state interests. In Leon V's policy he was flexible on the two aforementioned issues and he implemented economy. In matters of faith, however, he did not accept any discussion and did not allow imperial intervention in the doctrine and life of the church, even at the cost of his personal persecution and exile. With his ergography he effectively dealt with all the official and unofficial theology of the iconoclasts. He recapitulated the Church's teaching on the subject of the veneration of icons in response to the iconoclasm of Leon V with a master work "Control and Overthrow".The component of the second iconoclasm as seen by the action of the patriarch Niciphorous is the violence of power and the imposition of its power (even in church life) which degenerates the legal kingship into tyranny. Both Greek and international literature was used in the preparation of this thesis. Because only Paul Alexander had presented the life of Niciphorous in a monograph and the relevant studies on this person were few and far between, we cited a documented biography for the first time.We particularly researched our bibliographic sources in order to cover the gaps that arose in the research and thus we submitted the corresponding conclusions. We have arranged his extant works into a curated ergography. We analyzed the theology of the Patriarch regarding the subject of honor and veneration of holy icons. We quoted the evolution of the honor of the saint and confessor Niciphorous after his relics were retrieved from his place of exile and just four years after the triumph of Orthodoxy, on March 13th, 847. We discovered in the holy libraries and published for the first time hymno-hagiological works concerning his person and presented a collection of pictorial depictions of the saint after commentary (10th - 19th century works) from Greece and the Balkan countries.
