Study of precision casting with emphasis in the optimal determination of heat transfer coefficient

Abstract

The present PhD Thesis is related to a well known scientific issue: that of the high uncertainty associated with the numerical simulation of the casting process because of certain input parameters, including a parameter called “Interfacial heat transfer coefficient-IHTC or HTC. The HTC represents the heat transfer through the mould/casting interface. The present dissertation was focused on the determination of this very crucial input parameter. This coefficient determination is an ill-posed, inverse problem that required experimental data. For this reason, a series of experiments were conducted, measuring temperature in real-time during vacuum-pressure investment casting. The numerical analyses were carried out using ProCAST.The main contribution of my PhD was the study of the effect of geometrical aspects of the casting on the coefficient value, an issue that had not been studied before in great extent. It is highlighted that modelling using a uniform interfacial boundary condition doe ...
