Synthesis and chemical modification of carbon nanostructures aiming at the optimization of their gas and vapour storage properties

Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are an allotropic form of carbon like graphite, diamond and fullerenes. CNTs were first synthesized in 19912 by Sumio Iijima. The basic reason for the intense study of CNTs is their unusual mechanical and unique electrical properties for applications in chemistry, physics and generally in nanotechnology. Particularly, chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes took place in order to optimize their sorption and catalytic properties, and on the other hand synthesis of carbon nanotube arrays with magnetic properties and composite anodized alumina templated carbon nanotube membranes for sorption and separation applications. a) Single walled carbon nanotubes, with high carboxylic acid content, were chemically modified in order to develop their hydrophilic and organophilic analogues. b) Gold nanoparticles were supported on carbon nanotubes for low temperature catalytic oxidation of CO. c) Pd-doped carbon nanotubes were used for hydrogen storage. d) Preparation of ...
