The aims of the present thesis were: § The map representation of the runoff
basins of the research area islands § The definition of the basic torrential factors § The
definition of the torrential environment for every single runoff basin § The analysis of
water-shortage and flood-creation phenomena. § The investigation of the causes of the above
phenomena for the research area Initially the runoff basins and the torrents were
represented in maps and their morphometric and hydrographic characteristics were defined. It
was noticed that the very small runoff basins (smaller than 10 km²) are the most common in
all the islands apart from Chios. As for the shape of the runoff basins, category A overtops
and for the hydrographical net, dendritic form is the most usual. Afterwards the maps for
vegetation, relief and torrential petrologic formations were designed and the basic

was noticed that the very small runoff basins (smaller than 10 km²) are the most common in
all the islands apart from Chios. As for the shape of the runoff basins, category A overtops
and for the hydrographical net, dendritic form is the most usual. Afterwards the maps for
vegetation, relief and torrential petrologic formations were designed and the basic
torrential factors for every island in the research area were defined. The conclusions for
each island were: § Lemnos: Lemnos’ relief is mild and its torrents belong to the first
torrential interval. The climate is also mild and as for the geological setting, the newborn
geological formation covers the largest part of Lemnos surface. Vegetation in Lemnos
consists only of cultivated areas and rangelands. § Lesvos: Lesvos is also an island with
mild relief and its torrents wholly belong to the first torrential interval. The
preponderant geological setting is the crystal-igneous formation and the climate is mild.
30% of the island’s surface is covered by sylvatic plants whereas rangelands are quite
degraded due to the over-grazing and fires. § Chios: Chios’ relief is mostly mild apart from
the northern part of the island where the slopes are steeper. As for the climate, there is a
long dry (xerothermic) period. The dominant geological setting is the calcareous formation.
Regarding vegetation, Chios is covered by sylvatic plants (mainly bushes) at a total of 45%.
§ Samos: Samos has steep slopes and a rough relief. The annual rainfall is higher than the
other islands and the dry (xerothermic) period is also longer. The main geologic formation
is calcareous. § Ikaria: Ikaria has a very steep relief, high annual rainfall and long dry
period. The dominant petrologic formations are crystal-igneous and schistose. As for the
vegetation it is degraded due to over-grazing and not efficient for the soil protection. The
following step was to estimate the maximum prospective water discharge of the 100-year
period (Qmax100), the maximum prospective sediment discharge of the 100-year period
(Gmax100) and the mean annual degradation using the Gavrilovic equation. The results of this
work showed that despite the small size of the run-off basins, the prospective discharges
are significant.
